Je comptais aller les prendre aujourd’hui après ma classe, mais j’ai été obligé de la prolonger un peu et je n’ai pu arriver jusqu’à chez elle. En descendant la rue Rochechouard mercredi ayez la bonté je vous prie de monter chez elle au n° 38 et demandez-lui, ou à sa mère, les invitations qu’elle me destine. Encore une fois merci. Je vous serre la main affectueusement César Franck Lundi soir. Je viens de lire ce soir une scène et légende de Gwendoline. C’est charmant. Les voix sont disposées d’une façon ravissante. » Très belle signature, bon format (13,4 x 20,8 cm).   Chabrier avait achevé d’écrire Gwendoline le 12 juin 1885. L’ouvrage, refusé à l’Opéra de Paris, venait d’être créé le 10 avril 1886 au Théâtre de la Monnaie de Bruxelles. L’hebdomadaire Le Ménestrel n° 2881 du 23 mai 1886 annonce p. 203 : « M. Jacques Franco-Mendès, violoncelle-solo du roi des Pays-Bas, donnera une soirée musicale le samedi 29 mai 1886 dans les salons Pleyel-Wolff,avec le concours de Mlle M. Poitevinet de MM. Léon Reynier, JulesDelsart, Joseph Salmon, Mâche et Balbreck. Cet artiste distingué feraentendre, à cette occasion, deux de ses compositions, un quatuor en lamineur et un quintette en mi majeur pour instruments à cordes. »   Unique lettre de Franck à Chabrier connue, elle est publiée dans l’ouvrage César Franck, Correspondancede Joël-Marie Fauquet, page 158. Elle est également reproduite dans Correspondance – Emmanuel Chabrierde Roger Delage : 85-27n. p. 287, où elle est signalée comme appartenant à une collection particulière. Dans ces deux ouvrages, elle est datée par erreur du 23 novembre 1885.   Remarquable et précieux document, dans d’excellentes conditions.

After studying the cello and the trombone at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique he went on to play in a number of Big Bands. In the 1960s he accompanied Marlene Dietrich, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis and Charles Aznavour, and in 1970 added the tuba, working as a studio musician and recording with Michel Legrand, Vladimir Cosma, Michel Colombier and others. From 1973 to 1983 he accompanied Claude Nougaro with Eddie Louiss and Maurice Vander, and played in the orchestras of Martial Solal, Michel Portal and others.  In 1981 he formed his own group, the "Steckar Tubapack", and his first recording in 1982 won the Prix Boris Vian, awarded by the Académie de Jazz. Marc Steckar has recorded over twenty discs using the tuba and in 1990 he started to mix the tuba with other ensembles, big bands, brass bands, wind bands, and choirs. In 1994 he composed several concertos for tuba, euphoniums and trombones and in 1999 received the Sacem Prix Printemps. He has gone on to compose several children’s tales and concertos for clarinet quartet, trumpets and bass trombone, all with wind ensemble.  O.D.A.S.S. est un orchetre d'harmonie créé par  RODOLPHE PIERREPONT.
