Following their post-modern vibe further into Brian Eno's futuristic sound-space, U2 have now floated so far out of their customary atmosphere they've even abandoned their moniker. And with good reason. ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACKS 1, a loose collection of compositions written for films which may or may not exist, resembles a U2 album in only the vaguest of ways--it is basically a Brian Eno concoction, with Ireland's finest contributing not much more than their distinctive instrumental feel and Bono's new-found subtlety around a vocal mic. Yet these characteristics are enough to identify the participants, and to raise Passengers above the standard electronic/ambient din that has taken over clubland in the 1990s. ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACKS 1 is not strictly an experimental excursion. While much of the album follows the atmospheric norm of Eno's own Soundtracks series (after which this project was named), there are a number of traditional "songs" interspersed between the synthetic canvases, and most of these are softer extensions on the ZOOROPA aesthetic. "Slug" finds Bono whispering wishes over tension-filled keyboard washes and layers of rhythm. "Your Blue Room," a relaxed kin to "One" and "The Unforgettable Fire," is U2 playing Tindersticks--full of menacing organ, faint, Duane Eddy-like guitar, and starring Larry Mullen, Jr. as a Euro Funky Drummer. Finest among these surreal moves is "Miss Sarajevo," which uses Luciano Pavarotti's tenor as a voice of empowered grief in the melancholy story of a war-torn beauty contest. When ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACKS 1 moves outward, it flies in the direction of the nearest rave--adding world-wide rhythms to Eno's ambient soundscapes, to form a compass of emotions. "United Colours" is a straight-up techno track with passing samples of scratched records, fly-by vehicles and looped voices. "One Minute Warning" is an eerie alarm, complete with African and electronic beats, a machine-gun ticker-tape pulse, and an incomprehensible Eno-led choir seemingly ushering in the apocalypse. The album ends with a mixture of the two explored worlds: "Theme From Let's Go Native" is a bit of tribal rockisms, led by a stray dub bassline and Edge's simple chords. As Bono repeats a wordless vocal phrase and the band gains a forceful rhythmic confidence around him, it becomes obvious that what started out as foreign turf for these Passengers, has become a musical home away from home.     REGROUPER LES ACHATS (cela réduit les frais de poste)

Nous sommes pas mal sollicites par les labels, qui nous inondent de nouveautes. L'equipe etant reduite, il n'est pas toujours simple de choisir les albums qui seront chroniques et ceux, nombreux, qui resteront en rade. Les labels le savent et font ce qu'il faut pour attirer l'oeil du chroniqueur au travers des fameux press kits. Pourtant quand je lis le pitch de cet album, je vois que c'est le disque d'un guitariste prodige Afro-Americain, Tosin Abasi, ex guitariste d'un groupe de metalcore du nom de Reflux. Voila, voila, je zappe immediatement. Pourtant je retrouve ce groupe en lisant le Rock Hard de novembre (dans un pur but d'analyse concurrentielle rassurez vous -)), et decouvre un article dithyrambique sur leur concert en premiere partie de Between The Buried And Me a Paris. Quoi ? Qu'est-ce ? Aurais-je merde ? Serais-je passe a cote d'un truc ? Le doute m'habite (celebre blague de mon voisin de bureau) tout a coup, et je decide de m'y plonger. Grand bien m'en a fait car cet album restera pour moi un des trois OVNI artistique de 2011, avec le dernier Unexpect et le recent Primus, Green Naugahyde. Une montagne d'originalite, d'influences, de melange, de trucs dingues, qui ne peut laisser insensible. Je comprends deja mieux les commentaires du live report, et j'envie presque les parisiens (non, la j'exagere) de pouvoir voir de tels hurluberlus en liberte (live), dans la capitale. Le groupe tire son nom d'un livre de Daniel Quinn sur la race humaine appele Ismael. Et contrairement au premier album Animals As Leaders, sorti en 2009, qui a l'epoque etait plutot considere comme un projet solo de Tosin Abasi, ce Weightless est bien un album de groupe puisque de vrais musiciens sont venus epauler Tosin en lieu et place des programmations. Le groupe d'aujourd'hui se compose donc de Tosin Abasi a la guitare (huit cordes), de Javier Reyes a l'autre guitare et de Navene Koperweis a la batterie. Dans la longue liste des choses etranges contenues dans cet album, on note qu'il n'y a pas de basse, tous les plans sont faits avec deux guitares et ca ne choque pas particulierement, les trois musicos assurant particulierement bien. La prod est excellente et question style on oscille entre Satriani dans les moments les plus traditionnels (rares), Vai pour quelques bons delires, mais bien au dela pour tout le reste, melangeant des influences fusion, progressives, et neo metal. Quasi indescriptible dans la plupart des cas. C'est toujours bien rythme, tres changeant dans la structure des morceaux et ponctue de quelques sons electro (en percus souvent). On ne va pas faire du track by track, l'album contenant douze pistes instrumentales assez variees. Le premier morceau, An Infinite Regression, donne le ton, avec une intro de malade d'une sorte de tapping, une rythmique enorme, et des sons sortis de je ne sais ou. C'est simple, ca m'a plu a la premier ecoute. Meme remarque avec Odessa et son intro en sorte de morse. Je ne savais pas qu'on pouvait faire des sons comme ca avec une guitare. Les grosses rythmiques syncopees de cette compo restent une constante dans l'album (par exemple dans Weightless, elle sont d'une lourdeur impressionante), le rendant toujours pechu et captivant, tout au long de l'ecoute. Ce qui n'est pas toujours le cas des albums instrumentaux de maitres es-guitare. Si certains sont assez classiques, certains autres sont atomiques d'etrangete. Par exemple le tres fusion Earth Departure qui semble bien etre un morceau venu d'une autre planete dans sa structure. Certes type fusion, mais aussi tres puissant par la lourdeur de ses rythmiques, et tres progressif par le break en arpege en son milieu et son solo magnifique. On trouve aussi des choses plus jazzy comme le solo de Cylindrical Sea ou celui de To Lead You To An Overwhelming Question. On trouve aussi deux petits intermedes de calme, de volupte et d'etrangete toujours, avec un Espera atmospherique (et pourvu de subbass d'un autre monde) et David qui clot l'album. Il faut avoir quand meme l'esprit artistiquement tres ouvert pour pouvoir savourer le voyage que propose cet album. Si on accepte de se laisser emporter, l'experience est particulierement enrichissante. Captivant je vous disais... Salut ! Formidouble !! Bon et bien je vais pas m'etendre, d'autant que Didier Lalli de chez "Aux portes du metal" (voir commentaire precedent) a tout dit ! Pour ma part, j'ai connu ce groupe l'annee derniere, par hasard, et j'ai pris une tres bonne claque musicale d'autant que j'adore le metal instrumental. Alors, quand le second album a ete annonce, je l'ai attendu avec impatiente !
