LP  33t    Titanic est un groupe de rock norvégien, originaire d'Oslo. Le groupe est formé en 1969 à Oslo en Norvège. À cette période, le groupe comprend le guitariste Janne Løseth, le bassiste Kenny Aas, le batteur John Lorck, et le percussionniste Kjell Asperud. Titanic décide ensuite de recruter le parolier britannique Roy Robinson afin de mieux se faire connaitre à l'international1. Leurs premiers singles sont I See no Reason et Searchin, extraits du premier album1. Leur premier album, homonyme, est publié en 1970 au label Columbia Records. Ils enchaînent ensuite avec Santa Fe et Sultana, et encore quelques autres titres passés sur les radios ; très influencés par la mouvance rock psychédélique de l'époque comme Uriah Heep, ils agrémentent toutefois leur musique de percussions et l'on n'est parfois pas très loin du Santana des débuts. Les arrangements des cordes et des cuivres sur les titres Mary Jane et Firewater du premier album sont l'œuvre de William Sheller dont la carrière musicale débutait. Columbia Records demandera plus tard au groupe de jouer pendant le Festival de Cannes. En octobre 1971, Titanic atteint la cinquième place de l'UK Singles Chart avec le morceau Sultana. Le groupe continue à enregistrer des albums, Return of Drakkar en 1977 et Eye of the Hurricane en 1979 sur des labels indépendants, mais tombe dans l'oubli1. Ils continuent aussi à donner des concerts jusqu'en 1984 avant de se séparer. Ils se reforment brièvement en 1991 pour enregistrer l'album Lower the Atlantic. Suit une nouvelle reformation en 2008 qui donnera l'album Ashes and Diamonds, suivi de concerts en Europe. Peu de temps après, le chanteur Roy Robinson est victime d'un AVC qui l'oblige à quitter le groupe. Les membres restants continuent néanmoins de tourner avec Janne Loseth au chant jusqu'en 2014 où il dissout le groupe. Vers les années 2000/2010, le label Repertoire Records rééditera leurs albums. L'album Eagle Rock est réédité en CD avec en bonus un 45 tours de 1972 : Rain 2000/Blond et un 45 tours de 1974 : Macumba/Midnight Sadness. Generally, in the sense that Retrouvailles evinces, from beginning to end, that paradoxical mixture of solidarity in the pursuit of a collective goal, together with competitive individual excellence that makes jazz great. There is unstinting excellence and unflagging attention to detail; all the while knowing that no one is likely to get rich from this record, or this music, even though they really should. Specifically, because like many listeners of my advanced age, I fell in love with the music via a sound similar to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers—those little big bands (or are they large small ensembles?)— that mix genuine funk with elegant sophistication, delivered by exquisitely arranged multi-horn line-ups. De Preissac clearly draws on this inspiration as well. The expertly navigated changes in meter and tempo are right out of the Wayne Shorter-era Jazz Messengers. The always subtly surprising tonal colors in de Preissac's arrangements recall the arranging work of his compatriot, flautist Christophe dal Sasso's Exploration (Nocturne, 2006). There are further parallels. Drummer Andréa Michelutti, like Blakey, favors the booming lower range of his kit. De Preissac, for his part, calls to mind some of the best qualities of the playing of various Jazz Messengers pianists (Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton, Mulgrew Miller): a round, gospel-tinged sound, a slight florid tendency to the baroque, all the better to be heard over and between the large-ish ensemble. In de Preissac's case, these characteristics are overlaid with classical elements as well (as on his solo on "Minor's Mood"). As a brief cross-section of the players' strengths, listen to the sequence of short solos on "Jungleblues," which sounds for all the world like a Jazz Messengers show closer. Tenor saxophonist Jean-Christophe Béney is firmly in the tradition (though elsewhere on the record he favors ever so slightly "out" sonorities) and equally in control. As does trumpeter and composer Fabien Mary, who insistently splits the beats of his solos. For a bit of contrast, Michaël Chéret, on alto sax, heads for more angular territory, Eric Dolphy style, only to be followed by trombonist Mickaël Joussein's very cool sound on top of the rhythm. The leader takes a crystalline turn, followed by an arco episode from bassist Manuel Marchès and a brief trading of fours with drummer Michelutti. And that's not even the record's finest number.
