Le plus complet document que je connaisse au sujet des relations entre Hans Knappertsbusch et cette formation est le texte d'Otto Strasser qui accompagnait le volume de l'Edition DG du Cent-cinquantenaire de l'orchestre qui avait ete consacre a ce chef en 1991, volume qui contenait en particulier une epique Symphonie en ut de Franz Schubert. Vingt ans avant le present concert, le 29 aout 1929, Knappertsbusch (1888-1965) avait dirige l'orchestre pour la premiere fois, a Salzbourg deja. Les musiciens avaient note tout de suite deux choses, un dedain affiche du travail de repetition (« Vous connaissez l'oeuvre, je connais la partition » aurait-il declare avec un certain culot - il s'agissait tout de meme de l'Heroique !), et une forme d'autorite naturelle et de confiance en soi communicative qui allait faire du chef, dans les annees suivantes, un des interlocuteurs privilegies de l'orchestre, aux cotes des pointures qu'etaient Furtwangler, Toscanini et Bruno Walter. Knappertsbusch devait garder une place a part dans le coeur de l'orchestre, celle de quelqu'un dont on comprend instinctivement les demandes, qu'on aime et qu'on respecte. Un type un peu special, forme a l'ancienne ecole, qui n'attendait pas la fin des applaudissements pour commencer a diriger, qui se souciait de plaire au public comme d'une guigne, et que le marketing musical d'aujourd'hui aurait sans doute consterne (dans son langage image, il aurait parle de « cochonnerie »). Le premier mouvement, dont on deplorera seulement que sa toute fin ne preserve pas tout a fait l'equilibre entre cuivres et cordes qui permet d'apprecier pleinement l'embrasement de celles-ci, est a tout autre egard remarquable. Pas lent, en vingt minutes a peine, pas mou, pas imprecis ce jour-la, mais avec des petites fluctuations de tempo tres personnelles, Knappertsbusch donne peu a peu au chant instrumental une intensite rare. L'ultime section avant la coda, ou la phrase initiale revient douloureusement, en une montee progressive, je ne pense pas qu'on la dirige jamais mieux. Pris a bras le corps, le second mouvement va encore plus loin, avec de grands emballements visionnaires dans les sommets expressifs. Dedaigneux du beau son leche et du legato qui fera le succes commercial de tant de disques d'apres-guerre, Knappertsbusch cherche tout le temps la caracterisation. Il donne leur saveur rustique a certains episodes, et leur dimension mystique a ceux qui la demandent. L'instrument qu'il a sous la main convient parfaitement a la tache des cuivres assez rudes, les cordes les plus a meme au monde de jouer cette musique (les violoncelles, ideaux). On a l'impression d'ecouter le Bruckner de Bruckner. Bien que le cliche veuille que « Kna » soit toujours lourd et lent, le Scherzo est plus puissant que pesant, avec une Trio vraiment gracieux et inspire. Bien sur, les mouvements 3 & 4 de l'oeuvre ne sont pas aussi reussis que les precedents. Dans le Finale, la juxtaposition des elements reste problematique, et la prise de son assez seche n'aide pas. Il y a de beaux episodes aux cordes, mais l'interet principal de cette interpretation n'est pas la. Note historique bien qu'il ait ete blond, qu'il ait eu les yeux clairs, un physique d'officier brutal, des opinions conservatrices et un repertoire germano-allemand, Hans Knappertsbusch n'a jamais ete membre du parti nazi (a la difference de son cadet et ennemi Karajan, qui comme on le sait avait adhere deux fois). Avant meme de debuter l'ecole, il jouait deja du piano, maitrisait l'improvisation et, a 9 ans, il composa des chants complets, sans avoir recu aucune instruction musicale. Il etudia les mathematiques et la physique a l'Universite de Geneve pendant deux ans, tout en travaillant a la composition et en etudiant le piano avec Joseph Lauber (1864-1952). De 1918 a 1926, il vecut a Zurich, a Rome et a Paris. En 1926, il fonda la Societe de Musique de Chambre de Geneve, qu'il dirigea en tant que pianiste et claveciniste pendant 10 ans; durant cette periode, il enseigna aussi la theorie musicale et l'improvisation a l'institut Jaques-Dalcroze, et la musique de chambre au Conservatoire de Geneve. Pour trouver plus de temps pour ses compositions qu'il ne le pouvait en Suisse, il partit aux Pays-Bas en 1946, s'installa finalement a Naarden, mais, de 1950 a 1957, il enseigna neanmoins la composition au Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik a Cologne (Allemagne). Par la suite, il renonca completement a l'enseignement, et se concentra exclusivement sur ses compositions. Il est mort en 1974 a Naarden. It still plays very well. The cover shows some wear, light creasing, maybe tiny tears or pen marks. Overall this is the condition of Most of records sold in second hand. VG Very Good The record shows non-deep scratches, surface marks,wear and displays some surface noise. But still very playable. The cover shows wear, creasing, maybe spine splits, BB/cut hole, pen marks or small tears. It may be great but with an inner sleeve or an insert missing. Très bon Le disque a été beaucoup écouté.
