These ancient warriors elevated the fighting arts from crude forms through centuries of systematic development. The most legendary of these martial arts systems was created by the monks of the Shaolin monastery in ancient China. By the turn of the 16th century, a branch of the Shaolin fighting arts was transplanted to Okinawa and Japan. One of these styles was refined by the Mitose family and became known as Kosho-ryu Kenpo. Dr. James Mitose brought the art to Hawaii in the lace 1940s, where it was again modified by his disciple, William Chow, and named kenpo karate. Ed Parker, one of the first Americans to introduce karate to the United States, is credited with bringing kenpo from Hawaii to the continental U.S. in 1954. The Americanization of kenpo karate and other forms of the martial arts are the results of those few pioneers who had enough insight to foresee the need to adapt these refined movements to best suit the physical requirements of the land, the people and their temperament. A casual look at the fighting arts will demonstrate that they are changing rapidly and, with continued research and improved training techniques, will be continually refined. An eclectic form of American karate has been developing, a form that represents the essential qualities of America. Karate is becoming a melting pot for the martial arts where some of the most applicable forms of self-defense are developing to suit the needs of the people. The techniques are becoming sharper and more aggressive. As an art and a competitive sport, the martial arts are today coming into their own. Though there are no nationally recognized BKF champions as there are in boxing (such as Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard), champions such as Steve Sanders and Donnie Williams serve as pathfinders in the sport much the same way as the efforts of Jackie Robinson or Satchel Paige did in baseball. Many have made their own unique contributions. Kenpo karate as taught by Sanders and Williams is a martial art based on the most effective and rational use of every part of the body to defend one-self. It consists of punching, striking, kicking, clawing, gouging and any other action appropriate in defense of one's person. The movements are quick, concise and to the point. The theories and techniques in this book are presented in the same way. The approach is not so much in a religious or philosophical sense, but emphasizes the physical and mental techniques of preparation to develop confidence in a beginner who, as he studies the art in its deeper aspects, will discover that kenpo is an art of self-mastery—an awareness of the physical, mental and spiritual realities we all must face. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK When you go through the techniques in this book it is important that you read and experiment to first program your mind before performing the moves physically. For example, if a technique requires four moves, visualize them in your mind before you get up to experiment with the moves. Do not perform each step "one-at-a-time" and then look at the book to see the next step. Visualize all the moves first in your mind, then utilize a mirror so you can see yourself do them together in sequence. Once you have them in your mind and can see yourself do them, you will have more confidence in your abilities. Only then should you experiment with others and develop your techniques further. Remember: first, teach yourself mentally. Second, watch yourself do it. Third, experiment with others. If you take these steps, this book will be beneficial to you.
