"Streets of Philadelphia" is a song written and performed by American rock musician Bruce Springsteen for the film Philadelphia (1993) starring Tom Hanks, an early mainstream film dealing with HIV/AIDS. Released as a single in 1994, the song was a hit in many countries, particularly in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, and Norway, where it topped the singles charts. In the United States, the single peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. The song received acclaim and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song and four Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television. In 2004, it finished at number 68 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema. The song is listed among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. In early 1993, Philadelphia director Jonathan Demme asked Springsteen to write a song for his film, adding "I want it to play in the malls." Springsteen replied, "Well, I'm interested, so I'd like to come up with a song for you. If you give me some time, I'll see, but I can't promise." Springsteen recalled adding, "I'm not very good at scores". In late August, after the conclusion of the "Other Band" Tour, he recorded a demo of his completed song at Thrill Hill Recording, Beverly Hills, California (his home studio), supplying all of the instrumentation. He mailed the tape to Demme, who later said, "my wife and I sat down and listened to it, and we were literally weeping by the end". Meanwhile, background vocals were added by Tommy Sims (from the "Other Band"). In October, Springsteen recorded it at A&M Studios in Los Angeles, with Sims, Ornette Coleman on saxophone, and vocals by "Little" Jimmy Scott. It was mixed by Bob Clearmountain, included in the soundtrack, and the video was shot. However, in mid-December, Springsteen suddenly replaced it with his home demo from August, re-shooting some video scenes to eliminate Scott. The four-man combo version can be heard in a brief scene in the film when Tom Hanks exits Denzel Washington's office, but it was Bruce alone playing over the opening credits. "Streets of Philadelphia" was released on February 2, 1994, as the first single from the film's original soundtrack, with Springsteen singing and playing all the instruments and Tommy Sims on background vocals, and became a chart success worldwide. "Streets of Philadelphia" achieved greater popularity in Europe than in the United States. While it peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it became a number-one single in Germany, France and Austria. It peaked at number two in the United Kingdom, becoming Springsteen's highest charting hit in Britain, and number four in Australia. As of 2012, "Streets of Philadelphia" ranks as his most recent top ten hit. The song was included on the album All Time Greatest Movie Songs, released by Sony in 1999. He was of Romanian Jewish descent.[1] Elliott graduated from the Hartt School of Music and worked as a jazz pianist in New York and Paris in the 1950s.[2][3] He continued his post-graduate studies in composition with Arnold Franchetti, Isadore Freed, Bohuslav Martinů, and Lukas Foss, but it was Judy Garland who brought Elliott to California to become an arranger for her television show. Elliott continued his run in television as music director for Andy Williams' long-running series and later produced and conducted the NBC television special Live From Studio 8H: 100 Years of America's Popular Music. He also wrote themes for television shows Night Court, and co-wrote the themes to Barney Miller and Charlie's Angels with Allyn Ferguson. He is listed in New Grove's Dictionary of American Music and was awarded an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, the University of Hartford's Hartt School of Music. Elliott was co-founder and music director of the American Jazz Philharmonic (formerly the New American Orchestra)[4] and creator of the Henry Mancini Institute.[5] The original name of the Orchestra was b'"'The Big Ob'"' and was the largest jazz orchestra of its kind featuring over 92 musicians. Elliott blended the classical European style orchestra with modern American jazz style. His professional repertoire was diverse, highlighted by stints as music director for the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, Kennedy Center Honors and the 1984 Summer Olympics. In addition, he holds the distinction of serving as music director of the Grammy Awards for 30 consecutive years. He had an accomplished career in film, scoring numerous hit movies, including Sibling Rivalry, The Jerk, Oh God!, and Where's Poppa?. He also produced the Blade Runner soundtrack album with the New American Orchestra, and composed the song b'"'It's So Nice to Have a Man Around the Houseb'"' in 1950, made famous by Dinah Shore. On mesure en outre la pression pesant sur les épaules des musiciens, si l’on considère que leur précédent album American Idiot (2004) reste comme un triomphe, tant commercial, que critique. Green Day a donc décidé de faire jouer l’artillerie lourde: comme son prédécesseur, cette dépression nerveuse à l’usage du 21ème siècle s’avère, non seulement un concept album, mais l’un de ces opéras rock qui a offert quelques chefs d’œuvre (Tommy), et bien davantage de rogatons à l’histoire du rock. Nous suivons donc, en trois actes et dix-huit chansons (toutes composées par le pianiste, chanteur, guitariste et leader du groupe, Billie Joe Armstrong), la destinée d’un couple (Gloria et Christian), à travers les joies et vicissitudes de l’existence. Il est aisé d’admettre que ces deux personnages de fiction ne font qu’un dans le cerveau de leur créateur, le premier idéaliste, et le second enclin, dans l’atmosphère troublée que traverse un pays toujours en guerre quelque part dans le monde (les États-Unis), à appuyer sur le déclencheur d’une rampe de missiles. Mais il se trouve que ces anciens jeunes gens de Caroline du Nord ont aujourd’hui grandi : désormais trentenaires, les Green Day sont aujourd’hui bien moins nihilistes qu’auparavant, encourageant leurs fans (ces millions d’auditeurs qui, en cette ère de téléchargement, continuent à acheter leurs disques par containers entiers) à se mobiliser pour un monde meilleur. Ce qui n’a pas changé, en revanche, c’est la capacité du groupe à trousser des refrains définitifs (car, même si la somme de 21st Century Breakdown est supérieure aux parties, c’est bien de chansons dont il s’agit ici), qui les font pénétrer à grands fracas dans le rock le plus classique. Produit par Butch Vig (qu’on a connu aux côtés des Smashing Pumpkins ou de Nirvana), l’album s’autorise quelques digressions surprenantes (un cabaret expressionniste inspiré de Bertold Brecht ou Kurt Weill dans « Viva La Gloria », des écoutes répétées des œuvres complètes de John Lennon avec « Last Night On Earth » et son piano immaculé). De même, on pourra goûter avec suspicion le caractère empesé de certains thèmes, ou un choix systématique pour une production survitaminée, à base de guitares multiples, cordes synthétisées, et autres claviers ravageurs. Mais, bien heureusement, le disque se recentre très vite sur une musique à haute énergie (le cœur de métier de Green Day), et un parallèle évident tracé vers les très riches heures des Who, et leur batteur dynamiteur en chef Keith Moon. Jamais le projet ne prend le pas sur les chansons, et jamais le sérieux de l’entreprise ne fait oublier aux musiciens ce qu’ils furent à l’origine : des petits punks désireux de conquérir le monde. Album CD du guitariste, chanteur et compositeur de blues et de rock britannique Eric CLAPTON Album live  « UNPLUGGED »  édité en 1992 Album dans lequel il reprend, en public et en acoustique, des standards de blues et ses propres chansons.   « L'album a été enregistré en public dans les Bray Studios de Londres pour la série d'émissions MTV Unplugged. Il comprend en particulier des versions acoustiques de « Tears in Heaven » et « Layla ». Avec cet album, Clapton a remporté trois Grammy Awards: album de l'année, meilleure chanson de rock et meilleur chanteur pop. L'album a été aussi premier au Billboard en 1992. Cet album acoustique, qui ne devait initialement même pas être édité, devient la meilleure vente de Clapton. Warner pensait que le disque ne se vendrait pas et Clapton n’en voulait pas non plus car il comportait des erreurs musicales. Lorsque l'enregistrement sera terminé, Clapton paria 100 livres avec son producteur qu’il n’en vendra pas plus de 5000 copies. Son producteur encadrera son billet de 100 livres. Il y reprend de façon subtile plusieurs classiques blues de ses maîtres et ses chansons préférées comme « Tears In Heaven » écrite pour son fils Conor, mort l'année précédente, et « Layla » qui, cette fois ralentie, devient un hit mondial, 22 ans plus tard. L'album s'est vendu à plus de 20 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde.
