Troisieme opus pour ce groupe de southern-rock originaire d'Atlanta, auquels il convient d'ajouter le 6 titres "Honky Tonk Bootlegs" sorti en 2003. "The Whippoorwill" fait suite a l'excellent "Little Piece of Dixie" (2009) et se situe dans la continuite de ce dernier, avec cependant des sonorites qui tendent un peu plus vers le country-rock. Alors BlakBerry Smoke est -il a classer dans le southern-rock ou le country-rock?....Peu importe, sachant que les groupes de southern-rock ont toujours revendiques de fortes influences country voir blues. Blackberry Smoke fait indeniablement partie de ces formations qui assurent le releve de la generation precedente, (Lynyrd Skynyrd, ABB, Outlaws....)avec brio.Difficile a l'ecoute de ce disque de ne pas faire le rapprochement avec un autre groupe qui opere dans la meme mouvance, je veux parler du remarquable Whiskey Myers. Ce "Whippoorwill" est assurement le disque de southern-rock de cette rentree, meme si le "Last of a dyin'breed" de Lynyrd Skynyrd est un bonne surprise....Mais bon place aux jeunes! 13 titres et autant de perles, pas de baisse dans la qualite des morceaux qui ocillent, je le disais, entre rock sudiste et country. Si vous ne le possedez deja, faite d'urgence avec celui-ci, l'acquisition de precedent opus du groupe "Little Piece of Dixie" et pour faire bonne mesure les deux petits bijoux que sont les oeuvres de Whiskey Myers "Fire Water" et "Road of Life" Bayou county Afin d'etre le plus juste, le plus clair et le plus concis possible, je dirai qu'il s'agit la, de l'album Southern Rock de la rentree, celui de l'ete ayant ete pour moi l'excellent Royal Southern Brotherhood. Sur ce nouveau Blackberry Smoke, ca sonne, ca joue, ca chante et surtout ca compose grave, le tout en evitant les cliches inherents au style « sudiste » parfois quelque peu..........Bref, un groupe intelligent s'il en est !!!!! PS. Le double vinyl (car oui, il faut l'ecouter en vinyl !!!) est blanc pour le 1er tirage, ce qui ajoute un petit cote collector pas desagreable.... PS2. Le vinyl contient 1 dowload code pour telecharger l'album en MP3, plutot cool pour la voiture ! Un mobile fumant.... J'ai commande ce disque sans l'ecouter (chose que je ne fais habituellement jamais...) sur les conseils insistants d'un ami, batteur d'un groupe culte repute pour ses reprises disco de Bruce Springsteen, le bien nomme "Dixie French Coyote Killer Band" (en francais "le gang des exterminateurs de coyotes de Trifouyie-les-Oies"....etrange nom pour un groupe de disco, Non ?). Cet ami donc, dont je tairai le nom rapport aux gardes-chasse, m'avait dit "La vie est mal faite... Dieu reconnaitra les siens". Apres ces paroles quelque peu enigmatiques, j'avais fini par comprendre que de eniemes clones de Lynyrd Skynyrd venaient de sortir un nouvel album et que tout le monde s'en foutait.... il y avait vraiment quelque chose de pourri au royaume du Kentucky ! Pourtant l'objet se presente sous ses plus beaux atours, un digipack classieux agremente d'un dessin de bon gout d'un joli z'osiau tout plumeteux et d'un livret pratique contenant les paroles lisibles de l'integralite des chansons. Du cote de la musique, pas de doute, c'est bien du southern rock ! Treize titres tout en guitare/piano shuffles a blanc, accompagnant ce chant melodieux et trainant caracteristique du deep south. C'est bien simple, pour vous faire une idee de la musique de ces Blackberry Smoke, il suffit de prendre un shaker et d'y fourrer un 1/3 d'Allman Brothers, 1/3 de Lynyrd Skynyrd et 1/3 de Black Crowes, plus une pincee de Michael Stripe de REM (Eh oui ! je sais, c'est dur a admettre ! Et pourtant..) et un ingredient encore indetermine (sur le titre 2 notamment "Pretty little lie"), mais ca va me revenir (America ? Flying Burrito Brothers ? Eagles ? Doobie Brothers ?)... Vous secouez et quand ca fume vous servez... Et voila !
