Cary a obtenu unbaccalauréat en musique de l'Université Wesleyan en 1938 et a commencé àtravailler dans le Connecticut et à New York. Il a décroché un travail solo àtemps plein chez Nick's à Greenwich Village à New York en 1941(jusqu'en 1943) et a joué avec Joe Marsala en 1942. En 1943, il aégalement travaillé comme arrangeur pour Benny Goodman et a joué avec le Casa Loma Orchestra et Brad Gowans .
