Si je vous dis Them, je suis quasiment sur d'obtenir en guise de reponse Van Morrison. Ce qui est correct, car le rouquin irlandais en fut le leader charismatique et contribua a ce que cette formation nee en 1963 (Van Morrison, Billy Harrison, Eric Wrixen, Alan Henderson et Ronnie Millings), soit a jamais ancree dans la memoire collective; cette periode la plus connue (Gloria) tend malheureusement a occulter le fait que Them n'a pas ete que le tremplin pour la carriere solitaire de Van Morrison. A mon sens, on a tort de ne focaliser que sur le creneau R & B initial de ces gars de Belfast, car l'apres VM a montre de fort jolies choses et surtout, a cimente un groupe qui n'en avait alors que le nom. La phase psychedelique notamment a permis a Them de se restructurer differemment autour d'Alan Henderson, le bassiste, et d'apporter leur propre vision psyche. Pour cela, il leur aura fallu tourner le dos a leur glorieux passe, se remettre en question et prendre le chemin de la cote ouest des Etats-Unis, direction Los Angeles, la ou ca se passe alors et au moment le plus propice The Summer Of Love (1967). Kenny McDowell, recrute au chant pour faire oublier son predecesseur, s'acquitte amplement de sa mission. Sa voix se marie parfaitement aux desseins musico-lysergiques du Them nouveau. Il dispose d'un materiel de qualite pour briller a titre personnel, mais sa performance rejaillit sur l'ensemble, ce que les performances passees (avec VM) ne laissent jamais apparaitre. Cette facette acide des nord-irlandais, construite autour de pieces garage, de blues, de soul, de jazz, de psyche et de pans experimentaux bien canalises, est a des annees-lumiere de l'ere Van Morrison, que je ne renie en aucun cas. Elle est aussi convaincante que ce pour quoi Them est devenu culte aujourd'hui. Je vous invite a vous y pencher, car ce nouveau style leur sied fort bien. C'est surprenant, je vous le concede, dynamique et varie, mais tres tres interessant et rien ne m'a semble en retrait. Le long Square Room m'a seduit au-dela de ce que je pouvais imaginer. Obsedant, original, avec un petit cote The End (Doors), il est l'element qui demontre tout le potentiel d'un groupe devenu mature, et que son statut d'orphelin du barde Morrison semble ne pas avoir affecte. Ils ont bel et bien tourne cette page. Les Them nouvelle mouture, nouvelles ambitions, regeneres, semblent s'eclater. Cette metamorphose americaine et la fraicheur qui l'accompagne me plaisent beaucoup, en depit de quelques petits couacs episodiques et isoles sans grande importance.
