Née à Bucarest dans une famille de musiciens, d'une mère roumaine et d’un père hongrois, Ramona nourrit depuis l'enfance une passion pour les standards de Broadway et la musique de Duke Ellington qu'elle découvre très tôt grâce aux émissions de Willis Connover, en particulier « Jazz Hour » (sur les ondes de « Voice Of America »), écoutées en cachette par la famille. Ramona commence le piano à l'oreille à l'âge de trois ans, et ensuite à l'école de musique à partir de six ans. Elle baigne à la maison dans toutes sortes de styles musicaux: des chansons américaines, du jazz, des musiques traditionnelles et gitanes, des boléros cubains, mais aussi bien sûr de la musique classique, qu'elle va se mettre à étudier intensivement. Elle obtient à 23 ans son diplôme de soliste en piano classique au CNSM de Bucarest A la fin de ses études, elle rencontre le pianiste américain d'origine hongroise Jancy Korossy, icône du jazz international des années 50'-60' derrière le rideau de fer. Ce sera une rencontre déterminante qui propulsera Ramona complètement dans l'univers du jazz. Les deux pianistes se produiront aussi sur les scènes européennes pendant quelques années. En 2010, Ramona s’installe à Paris et monte un trio avec Guillaume Duvignau à la contrebasse et Frédéric Sicart à la batterie. Elle rencontre en 2012 le contrebassiste Nicolas Rageau avec lequel elle va développer plusieurs projets. En 2015, Ramona enregistre son premier album en trio avec Nicolas Rageau et Frédéric Sicart,« XS Bird » (Blackb'&'Blue), dédié à la mémoire de Jancy Korossy, décédé deux ans plus tôt (prix du meilleur album de jazz en Roumanie). En 2017, changement d'orchestre et de son pour un nouvel album plus ellingtonien « Lotus Blossom » (Blackb'&'Blue), enregistré en quartet avec André Villéger au sax ténor, Nicolas Rageau et Philippe Soirat à la batterie. Il en est de pire. « Labyrinthe quartet », ainsi se nomme son groupe, devient tout un programme. Une sorte de projection de cette filiation qui unit Nissim et Monk, le compositeur le plus borgésien qui soit, et la volonté d’être soi-même. Réunir un vibraphone, Stephan Caracci virtuose de ce curieux instrument, une contrebasse qui se fait basse électrique dans un hommage à Monk, Jean-Luc Ponthieux et une batterie, Mourad Benhammou qui sait tout de cet instrument emblématique du jazz, était un pari qui n’avait rien de pascalien. Generally, in the sense that Retrouvailles evinces, from beginning to end, that paradoxical mixture of solidarity in the pursuit of a collective goal, together with competitive individual excellence that makes jazz great. There is unstinting excellence and unflagging attention to detail; all the while knowing that no one is likely to get rich from this record, or this music, even though they really should. Specifically, because like many listeners of my advanced age, I fell in love with the music via a sound similar to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers—those little big bands (or are they large small ensembles?)— that mix genuine funk with elegant sophistication, delivered by exquisitely arranged multi-horn line-ups. De Preissac clearly draws on this inspiration as well. The expertly navigated changes in meter and tempo are right out of the Wayne Shorter-era Jazz Messengers. The always subtly surprising tonal colors in de Preissac's arrangements recall the arranging work of his compatriot, flautist Christophe dal Sasso's Exploration (Nocturne, 2006). There are further parallels. Drummer Andréa Michelutti, like Blakey, favors the booming lower range of his kit. De Preissac, for his part, calls to mind some of the best qualities of the playing of various Jazz Messengers pianists (Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton, Mulgrew Miller): a round, gospel-tinged sound, a slight florid tendency to the baroque, all the better to be heard over and between the large-ish ensemble. In de Preissac's case, these characteristics are overlaid with classical elements as well (as on his solo on "Minor's Mood"). As a brief cross-section of the players' strengths, listen to the sequence of short solos on "Jungleblues," which sounds for all the world like a Jazz Messengers show closer. Tenor saxophonist Jean-Christophe Béney is firmly in the tradition (though elsewhere on the record he favors ever so slightly "out" sonorities) and equally in control. As does trumpeter and composer Fabien Mary, who insistently splits the beats of his solos. For a bit of contrast, Michaël Chéret, on alto sax, heads for more angular territory, Eric Dolphy style, only to be followed by trombonist Mickaël Joussein's very cool sound on top of the rhythm. The leader takes a crystalline turn, followed by an arco episode from bassist Manuel Marchès and a brief trading of fours with drummer Michelutti. And that's not even the record's finest number.
