Young Gertrude Marion Morton, known as “Honey Bunch,” lives with her father and mother  somewhere  in the northeastern United States. Her best friend is Ida Camp, and the neighbor boy is Norman Clark.  The “Honey Bunch” series, from the publisher of Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and the Bobbsey Twins, was written under the pseudonym  Helen Louise Thorndyke.  The first sixteen were actually written by Josephine Lawrence,  beginning in 1923 with Honey Bunch: Just a Little Girl,  and chronicled Honey Bunch on various trips and adventures throughout the series. The  34th book was published in 1955.   Honey Bunch: Her First Little Garden, #5 in the series, was obviously intended for a younger set than Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys,  Maison sans animaux ni fumée. Déjà on remarque le rôle essentiel de Doug Ingle, claviériste et auteur-compositeur de toutes les chansons (en dehors d’une reprise plutôt anodine du « Get Off Of My Life, Woman » d’Allen Toussaint). Censé assurer le poste de chanteur, Darryl DeLoach ne s’exprime vocalement que sur très peu de titres, pas même sur ceux du single, « Possession » et « Unconscious Power », se contentant le plus souvent de faire les chœurs ou de taper sur son tambourin, et le moins qu’on puisse dire est que la rythmique ne brille pas par sa subtilité. Le groupe hésite encore un peu entre la pop psyché ou les jams bille en tête. Dans l’ « Iron Butterfly Theme », sans doute le morceau le plus caractéristique de cet album, riffs plombés et bruitages bizarres à la guitare se succèdent, tandis que des effets d’écho un peu risibles pour l’auditeur d’aujourd’hui donnent l’impression qu’on se trouve dans un film d’horreur à bon marché des années 50 visionné sous acide. Peu remarqué à sa parution (n°78 du Billboard), Heavy restera avant tout comme le témoignage d’une certaine phase dans l’évolution de ce groupe, peut-être pas la plus importante mais réellement déterminante pour la suite de son histoire. Et si maladresses il y a (ô combien), elles ne l’en rendent que plus touchant.
