Yes, some of the songs are among the best recorded by Liverpool's finest post-punk band, but the inclusion of two bizarre covers doesn't help the collection reach any sort of classic status. Perhaps WEA Records thought fans would see The Cutter as a best-of collection, which it isn't; maybe they thought those same fans would clamor for the covers of songs by the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. To start with, the album material isn't necessarily the best of. While the songs are a just-decent sample of some of the finer moments from the band's glory days, Songs to Learn and Sing and Ballyhoo are both better introductions. Albums covered include Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, Porcupine, Ocean Rain, and Echo & the Bunnymen. There are classics here to be sure: "The Cutter," "A Promise," and "Ocean Rain" are all glorious slices. But there are glaring omissions among these classics, including "Lips Like Sugar," "The Killing Moon," "Bring On the Dancing Horses," and "Never Stop." The Cutter might be a nice find in the used CD bin, if one is looking for one particular track and an assortment of other okay songs. The live covers certainly don't justify the album, as they serve merely to break up an otherwise interesting collection. "Paint It Black" sees Ian McCulloch butchering the classic song like a campy vampire; it actually starts out promising, but McCulloch falls apart about a minute and half in. "All You Need Is Love" just sounds stupid, as if the band had only been rehearsing it for a day; there's no passion in the performance. Par contre, on est passe completement a cote du groupe libanais, The Kordz, qui a sorti son premier album Beauty & The East (elegant jeu de mot) en 2011 dans certains pays mais dont la promo de sortie n'arrive qu'aujourd'hui en France. Quelle grossiere erreur ! Je remercie le label de cette re-sortie qui nous permet de rattraper la boulette. Evidement le Metal libanais, peu d'entre nous connait, et bien grace a cet album de The Kordz, nous nous coucherons tous moins bete. Le groupe est donc originaire de Beyrouth, forme vers la fin des annees 90, puisqu'il existe depuis plus de 12 ans avec un line up assez stable autour d'un noyau dur compose de Moe Hamzeh (chant), Mazen Siblini (claviers), Nadim Sioufi (guitare) et aujourd'hui rejoints par Alan Azar (guitare), and Nadim Abou Chakra (basse). Ils se sont forges une solide reputation dans leur pays, en le sillonnant et en assurant des concerts toujours de grande qualite. Ils ont meme joue dans les zones de guerre, pour les troupes de l'ONU (ca force le caractere, j'imagine). Leur premier album, Beauty & The East, est donc distribue en France et je dois reconnaitre que l'on tombe assez facilement sous le charme de cet album, dont le style oscille entre metal prog, rock parfois meme teinte de pop, avec souvent cette petite pointe d'epice venue tout droit du Sud de la Mediterranee. La prod est assuree par Ulrich Wild (Deftones, Static X, '), et le chant est assure dans un anglais parfait. Explications detaillees ! L'album attaque avec une intro plutot electro avant d'attaquer un morceau pas si oriental que ca, Deeper In. On est immediatement sous le charme de la voix envoutante de Moe. Superbe ! Le son est excellent, le refrain archi accrocheur, vraiment pro. Question instru, le piano sonne particulierement bien je trouve, rendant l'ensemble particulierement bien equilibre et l'influence oriental plutot absente (sauf un peu la voix). Sur Nothing Or Everything, le morceau suivant, meme remarque, difficile de croire le groupe originaire de Beyrouth (sauf peut etre les claviers), le son est extremement moderne, pechu, assez orchestre, tres bien rythme. Moe utilise un poil de radio box sur sa voix. Il faut attendre l'intro d'Insomnia Kid pour entendre les premiers sons vraiment orientaux, avec ici, des percus, et des violons. Le resultat est interessant, « best of both worlds » comme on dit chez les anglo-saxons, plus de doute, on est dans le Metal oriental. La voix de Moe, est encore assez impressionnante, on trouve un petit break oriental, il y en aura d'autres. Etonnant sur Get Behind, Moe sonne un peu comme Ozzy, et on repart vers l'occident avec un morceau assez heavy, fort bon aussi. Seuls les claviers viennent faire balancer le mix un peu vers l'orient.
