Bruce Springteen streets of philadelphia 12" Picture disc rare !!! "Streets of Philadelphia" is a song written and performed by American rock musician Bruce Springsteen for the film Philadelphia (1993) starring Tom Hanks, an early mainstream film dealing with HIV/AIDS. Released as a single in 1994, the song was a hit in many countries, particularly in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, and Norway, where it topped the singles charts. In the United States, the single peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. The song received acclaim and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song and four Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television. In 2004, it finished at number 68 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema. The song is listed among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. In early 1993, Philadelphia director Jonathan Demme asked Springsteen to write a song for his film, adding "I want it to play in the malls." Springsteen replied, "Well, I'm interested, so I'd like to come up with a song for you. If you give me some time, I'll see, but I can't promise." Springsteen recalled adding, "I'm not very good at scores". In late August, after the conclusion of the "Other Band" Tour, he recorded a demo of his completed song at Thrill Hill Recording, Beverly Hills, California (his home studio), supplying all of the instrumentation. He mailed the tape to Demme, who later said, "my wife and I sat down and listened to it, and we were literally weeping by the end". Meanwhile, background vocals were added by Tommy Sims (from the "Other Band"). In October, Springsteen recorded it at A&M Studios in Los Angeles, with Sims, Ornette Coleman on saxophone, and vocals by "Little" Jimmy Scott. It was mixed by Bob Clearmountain, included in the soundtrack, and the video was shot. However, in mid-December, Springsteen suddenly replaced it with his home demo from August, re-shooting some video scenes to eliminate Scott. The four-man combo version can be heard in a brief scene in the film when Tom Hanks exits Denzel Washington's office, but it was Bruce alone playing over the opening credits. "Streets of Philadelphia" was released on February 2, 1994, as the first single from the film's original soundtrack, with Springsteen singing and playing all the instruments and Tommy Sims on background vocals, and became a chart success worldwide. "Streets of Philadelphia" achieved greater popularity in Europe than in the United States. While it peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it became a number-one single in Germany, France and Austria. It peaked at number two in the United Kingdom, becoming Springsteen's highest charting hit in Britain, and number four in Australia. As of 2012, "Streets of Philadelphia" ranks as his most recent top ten hit. The song was included on the album All Time Greatest Movie Songs, released by Sony in 1999. EX++ the cd looks really fine but you can see (under a light if you check carefully) few minor surface marks. Usually light details but that is enough to see the cd not new. EX+ the cd is still in great condition but you can see more little surface marks (always light, not deep) and they are easier to see. EX or EX- cd has many scratches but still not deep. no damage. Cd plays fine. less than EX- when the condition is less than EX I don t grade it VG because in french "VG" means "VERY GOOD" and I can t say a cd with many visible scratches is in very good condition. so under Ex/EX-, I will only describe the cd condition with words like: "many visible surface marks or many scratches or deep scratches" all the CD I list plays fine despite their condition less than EX. anyway if one day a cd doesn t play fine, the buyer can send it back and get a refund. if a cd has scratches they go through silver layer and usual we can see they from both sides of the CD I usually don t sell it or damages will be described in item s condition. On the contrary, the record sounds like the culmination of a band's efforts over many years. The group has a distinct sound of its own, often led by Hornsby's bright piano chords and elastic tenor, with cohesive and evocative arrangements; there is new age music here, as well as jazz and country, and the mixture is presented naturally by musicians who seem to have been playing with each other for some time. Similarly, the songwriting has its own flavor. Hornsby wrote seven of the nine songs with his brother John Hornsby, and they create their own world, a working-class environment of longing and loneliness set against the background of the Virginia Tidewater area. (The album cover displays a sepia-toned photograph of the band set over another photograph of the long Chesapeake Bay Bridge.) The lyrics are lightly poetic and restrained, for the most part. The exception is the title song (written by Bruce Hornsby alone), a brave if somewhat clumsily written attack on the heartless right-wing politics of the mid-'80s, as the U.S. suffered through a second Reagan administration determined to roll back civil rights gains. The boldness of the statement and the lovely piano theme more than compensate for the awkward writing, however, making the song one of the album's most memorable. And that's saying a lot when the competition includes the engaging "Mandolin Rain" and the appealingly romantic "Every Little Kiss" (Hornsby's other sole writing credit). Perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that the music is so accomplished. Hornsby was no teenage neophyte when he made it, having kicked around the music business and gotten into his thirties, and the band includes such veterans as David Mansfield, who may be remembered as a member of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder troupe and the Alpha Band, as well as being a film composer. Sometimes a debut album just happens to be the first music most people get to hear by a mature talent, and that's the case here on the debut album of the year. C'est donc chose faite en cette fin d'annee 98 puisque Santa Claus arrive en ville avec dans sa hotte un coffret non pas de 1, ni de 2, ni de 3 mais de 4 CD bourres jusqu'a la gueule (plus de 60 titres, l'equivalent de 5 albums !) de petits bijoux oublies par le Boss dans ses tiroirs durant toutes ces annees. Les 1er mots qui viennent a l'esprit en ecoutant ces 4 CD monumental et impressionnant ! Le 1er CD debute par 4 demos de titres qui figureront sur le 1er album du Boss puis c'est un veritable defile de beautes qui commence. Combien de ces titres auraient pu figurer sur des albums du Boss ? Au hasard et en vrac Zero And Blind Terry, Restless Nights, Loose Ends, Be True, Sad Eyes, Trouble In Paradise, Back In Your Arms, Brothers Under The Bridge... Le seul 3eme CD contient un nombre impressionnant de classiques instantanes Cynthia, My Love Will Not Let You Down, Frankie, TV Movie enchaine avec le tres rockabilly Stand On It, Car Wash, Brothers Under the Bridge (`83), Man At The Top, Janey Don't You Lose Heart, The Wish... Born In The USA est egalement livre revisite en version acoustique, plus propice a la comprehension du message, tout sauf patriotique, qu'avait souhaite delivrer Springsteen avec cette chanson en 84. Le packaging est soigne et de qualite, le livret, illustre de belles photos, propose l'integralite des textes. A l'ecoute des 4 CD qui composent ce coffret a bijoux, indispensable pour tout fan du Boss qui se respecte, on se dit que, Springsteen est vraiment un artiste a part dans le monde du rock, frappe par la grace, toujours en eveil, rarement en manque d'inspiration... Ce qui n'est pas assez bon pour etre commercialise, on le laisse de cote, et quand l'inspiration se fait attendre, presse par une maison de disque, on sort une quinzaine d'inedits. Donc non seulement ce n'est pas quinze, mais soixante six chansons qui nous arrivent en pleine poire, mais en plus, ce n'est (pratiquement) que de l'excellent, a se demander comment au moins la moitie de ces titres ne furent pas selectionnes en leur temps !
