Nikon AF Nikkor ED 300mm f4 autofocus prime lens, with front and rear caps. In good condition and in full working order, though the focus can be noisy (details below). Externally this lens is in very nice condition, with only light signs of use. The glass is also good, it's clean, clear and free of haze and fungus. There is one tiny mark on the front element, which doesn't affect image quality, and it's otherwise unmarked. As with any used lens, there are a few specks of internal dust. The aperture blades are excellent, they're clean and free of oil, the aperture ring clicks well through the stops and the iris is snappy. The AF servo motor can be noisy - sometimes the screw-drive gear makes a high-pitched noise when refocusing between near and far subjects (or vice versa). This is apparently a common problem on this lens, but it shouldn't affect performance. The autofocus is accurate, but the noise could be disturbing if, for example, you're photographing wildlife. In manual focus the gear will make a similar high-pitched noise if you focus quickly. For normal fine focusing it doesn't make this noise, you have to move the barrel quite quickly to provoke it. In any case, I have set a lower price to reflect the issue. The removable filter holder works well and the included Nikon L37c is in good condition, with minor signs of use. The built-in hood is slightly dented but also still works very well. When tested the lens produces sharp, contrasty images. I often have similar or compatible items for sale, see my shop for details. Here is a very rare Sigma 28mm f/2.8 H.L. Wide (NOT the much more common and worse Mini Wide) at an exceptional price + a nice Sigma hard case. The prominent metal cam (as well as a prominent plastic part) that is used to control the aperture from the camera was cut out, to enable mounting on Sigma SA cameras. So this lens won't allow auto-aperture on Pentax cameras. But it has an aperture ring, so it can be adapted, for instance, on a Sony mirrorless camera with a Pentax K to Sony E adapter, and be operated with no issues like any other adapted lens. Apart from that, the lens is mechanically faultless. Optically, there's a little scratch on the front lens, that can't be seen on images. A few painted markings are gone. Diminishing brightness towards the edges of the image is an inevitable problem with wide-angle focal lengths such as 28mm, due to the so-called “cosine fourth” law. Additional loss of peripheral brightness due to the large aperture (vignetting) only strengthens the effect. While there is no escaping the merciless “cosine fourth” law, SIGMA managed to erase vignetting through an optimal mutual configuration of each lens group within the retrofocus design. This method also minimized “coma aberration,” a color fringing effect that occurs as the amount of light increases. SIGMA had created a wide-angle lens with very little vignetting and – an additional plus – without the unsightly swirly bokeh pattern caused by vignetting of out-of-focus areas. The lens was the culmination of SIGMA’s research and experience with 28mm F2.8 lenses.
