Grado is happy to present the third version of our Head-Fi headphone series... the HF3. The HF3 utilizes a CNC machined Red Oak wood housing which goes through a 2 step proprietary curing process to achieve the correct tonal balance. It has the latest version of our 44mm driver specially tuned to match perfectly with the wood housing. The HF3 is also the first headphone to use our new wiring enclosed in a braided sheathing for improved flexibility and performance. The HF3 comes with an attractive black headband highlighted with white stitching and the Grado "L" cushion. Will come an extra set of pads: TTVJ Delux Flat which is a perfect match for these.

Basée à Brooklyn depuis ses origines en 1953, Grado s’est d’abord fait les dents sur les Cellules phono (ce qu’il fait encore d’ailleurs), les enceintes pendant un très court laps de temps dans les années 60, puis les casques en 1989 via le HP1000: Celui, ou plutôt ceux qui vont nous intéresser. Grado HP1000: rêve de métal Habitué aux cellules phono depuis près de 40 années, la marque Grado, on ne sait pas bien pourquoi, se lança dans l’aventure du casque à la fin des années 80. A l’époque, il n’y avait presque que de gros constructeurs. Les modèles haut de gamme, Allemand ou Japonais, relevaient de designs parfois ovniesques, mais toujours extrêmement sérieux, entre la rigueur Allemande (Orpheus HE90, bien qu’il sortira en 91) et les touches luxueuses Japonaises (Sony R10). Ainsi le nain de Brooklyn resta sur son axe proche de l’artisanal et sa très petite équipe, proposant une approche unique. En sorti le HP1000, tout en aluminium usiné pour les coques, en acier pour les réglages et en cuir pour le revêtement de l’arceau. Tout dans ce casque excepté le driver relevait de la fabrication à petite échelle, avec ses qualités et ses erreurs. Jamais plus Grado n’ira aussi loin dans le concept, mais c’était à l’époque la seule solution pour fabriquer toutes les pièces (excepté le driver encore une fois). le support des tiges en aluminium ne sera plus réutilisé par exemple. Dommage, car il donnait une vrai tronche industrielle, plus aussi réussie chez la gamme PS. L’utilisation du métal pour la coque, entourant directement le driver, permettait un bien meilleur amortissement que le plastique traditionnellement utilisé pour les casques. source image Enfin, plus important que tout, le driver. Bien qu’il n’était qu’un modèle électrodynamique à membrane plastique, il recelait quelques petites particularités. - Son dôme (partie centrale bombée) était légèrement plus rigide que le reste de la membrane via l’utilisation d’une structure striée - La bobine mobile (cercle de cuivre attaché à la membrane et repoussé par l’aimant) n’était pas attachée à la base de ce dôme comme cela se fait habituellement, mais en très légère périphérie, créant une sorte d’anneau entre la bobine et le début du dôme - La base du dôme était quant à elle raccordée à un second cercle, lui-même collé à une sorte d’amortisseur, sur le principe d’un piston, limitant le mouvement de la membrane pour éviter de la distorsion à trop haut-volume L’idée derrière ces particularité étaient d’à la fois réduire les résonances possibles et descendre un peu plus bas dans le spectre. driver du RS1 à gauche, driver du HP1000 à droite (source image) Mais tout n’était pas rose, même pour l’époque. Pour commencer le modèle est relativement lourd du fait de sa structure métallique. Pour ne rien gâcher, la mousse utilisée alors par Grado était particulièrement fine et fragile, laissant vite un port désagréable et une durée de vie douteuse. La plupart des utilisateurs « upgradent » donc depuis vers des mousses plus modernes. Grado, n’ayant pratiquement pas changé le diamètre de ses drivers avec le temps, permet une certaine universalité de ses mousses. Son haut de gamme supra (reposant sur les oreilles) se fait autour des coussinets dits L, son haut de gamme circum (englobant les oreilles) autour des coussinets dits Jumbo. For sale is an original first-issue, and extremely rare 5Ω version of the Beyer DT-48S, from 1964, perfectly working with original box and NOS/never used replacement earpads (oval and round). - Made in Western Germany Unique Opportunity to own a piece of audio history ! DT-48S (S for Stereo) were the first stereophonic headphones built with Nagra-Kudelski specifications, to be used in tandem with the Nagra IV-S or Nagra SN tape recorders. At the time it was a largely hand-made production and cost 224 deutschmarks (price list). 
Some DT48S were even OEM’d as Kudelski instead of Beyer.

 Condition: They are not mint but for 56 years-old headphones, they are in excellent shape. The actual silver metal drivers are intact without a single scratch, no rust or anything on the metal headband. It was gently used, and very well taken care of. It is terminated by a standard stereo 6,35mm jack.

 There is only visible wear on the upper headband coated-foam material (that tends to dry overtime) but this is still one the most well-preserved (and complete!) original DT-48S set I have ever seen. Some history: 

 The most famous user of those headphones, is without any doubt Stanley Kubrick. You can see him on a photograph from the set of Clockwork Orange, wearing the 25Ω version of those, with oval ear-pads. 
In fact, those were designed for monitoring dialogues and ‘concrete’ sounds in mind, as well as very surgical applications like lab-work, aural testing and the like.
 Usage: Music comes out dramatically different and unhyped as they are very medium oriented, bass is present but depends on the way it was recorded, and it is known that oval ear-pads are adding bass due to the way they isolate the ears. 
With very transparently recorded music, like some albums from the ECM label (think Arvo Pärt) or ethnographic records, jazz and some classical and experimental music (and with the right preamp of your choice to drive them) those Beyers are unbeatable and still a reference today in revealing the naked truth. Perfect for hyper-critical mixing, and obvisouly monitoring. Be ware that it really takes getting used-to but the reward is unmatched. 

This is a reluctant sale, but I have to finance studio gear.
