From above, the charcoal silk finished surface doesn’t give much away, but the underneath of the Base 01 Platform incorporates some clever thinking. A pair of metal beams run from front to back and are linked to the main platform by compliant but absorptive coupling. In turn, the beams rest on four hard rubber feet. The combination of metal, soft coupling and MDF platform material makes for what is effectively constrained layer damping, with enough decoupling to prevent higher frequency vibrations from travelling up from feet to platform. The arrangement gives limited attenuation of very low frequencies, but good performance across mid-range and treble, and the MDF part is relatively non-resonant. This platform proved versatile in use, giving fine results with a range of equipment including both suspended and solid-chassis turntables. It was also very good with CD players, tightening up the sound and also adding bass extension. Amplifiers benefited less obviously, but a valve preamp certainly gained something in the clarity department and a solid-state power amp seemed more detailed in the lower octaves. High treble seemed largely unaltered in most cases, though the turntables gained some slight extra high frequency precision. Don’t get me wrong on that because they sound incredibly good: perfect separation, great timbre, heaps of detail but never over-analytical and always musical and dynamic. Treble is extended and detailed but never harsh sounding. I do like my treble and the Prime does a splendid job for my taste. Treble is on the same level as the mids and bass: clarity, detail and sparkle. The Prime’s sound stage is wide and deep with a perfect balance and 3-dimensionality. Very Nice Nakamichi 1000 ZXL in exceptional condition. The tape deck has been totally renewed both electronically and mechanically in order to reach the best possible performance. The description of the work that has been performed in this unit is here below: All the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced by the Top quality capacitors, and this includes the failure prone "orange film capacitors" that must be replaced (according to the Nakamichi recommanded tolerances) to secure the unit in the long run and get the best performance: a total of >230 caps have replaced by new ones. The 3 relays have been replaced by new (meaning unused) ones in order to improve the long term reliability of this state of the art tape recorder. Regarding the mechanism, a Nakamichi specialist named "Audio Retro" (one of the Nakamichi best specialist) has changed all the belts and the pinch rollers. The sophisticated mechanism has been totally lubricated properly. The mechanism and the azimuth have been tuned. Audio Retro has also optimized the frequency response curves using an oscilloscope and the appropriate equipment. The final result is truly excellent, just the same as a brand new Nakamichi 1000 ZXL. I have tested the tape deck in my own home afterwards and I was very surprised to hear so many details on very old tapes: the quality was far beyong my expectations. So this Nakamichi 1000 ZXL is certainly one of best sample ever proposed on auction.
