Materials and finish The deliberate choice of material, and the final surface treatment of the products’ finish, are characteristic of Bang & Olufsen and one of their true core competences. B&O's designers know that people use several of their senses in experiencing a product. The finish is then refined to perfection and created to provide a tangible experience that supports the visual impression. Why build amplifiers into the loudspeakers instead of keeping them separate? Because you can reduce the size of the cabinet volume to one-third of the size of a conventional loudspeaker with the same sound capacity. The principle is called Active Loudspeakers, and what you get is a compact loudspeaker that can play at high volume without distortion or damage to its drive units. Furthermore, when amplifier, treble and bass units are paired for the same task, they can be tailored to compensate for each other's shortcomings. What you hear is music that sounds exactly like the instrument it originally came from (See active speakers) Deep bass: how to make deep bass with a shallow cabinet All loudspeakers, regardless of brand, size or construction, make sound by converting electric energy into acoustic energy. They push air in waves, which is what our ears pick up. To get high sound pressure, you need to move a lot of air. You can use a very large diameter loudspeaker membrane, which moves a very short distance. Or (as Bang & Olufsen prefer), you can make the membrane "deeper", in other words, make it move a greater distance with a smaller diameter. Imagine two balloons, one round and shaped like a ball, the other long and tubular. Both contain the same amount of air; it's simply their shapes that are different. A side benefit to the deeper membrane is that it allows a smaller cabinet, with greater freedom as far as form and function are concerned. Since no two loudspeaker units have exactly the same physical characteristics, Bang & Olufsen calibrate them individually to make certain that the sound of each and every loudspeaker leaving our factory is identical. By employing an active electronic crossover network with equalization, we're able to adjust frequencies before they're amplified. The signal from the sound source is shaped before distribution to the separate power amplifiers for bass and treble. In this way, the performance of the various components is "fine-tuned", until they produce an ideal, harmonised output, which will be the same, no matter which BeoLab loudspeaker you feast your eyes upon. The custom made driver units of a BeoLab loudspeaker feature extra-heavy membranes with longer movement, which help produce a deeper bass. Adaptive Bass Linearisation Adaptive Bass Linearisation (ABL) is a process patented by B&O and is incorporated in BeoLab loudspeakers. The idea is to use the surplus capacity in amplifiers and driver units, arising by normal listening levels, for a bass extension - a sound reproduction with more bass, than the loudspeaker otherwise would be able to produce. The function is adaptive. This means that the loudspeaker adapts to the signal it receives. Loudspeaker drivers are therefore fully exploited, without suffering mechanical or electronic abuse, and the built in amplifiers are not subjected to signals would otherwise create an overload situation. ABL  gives stunning bass reproduction considering the size of the loudspeaker in which it is incorporated, under normal listening levels. ESI also contains advanced tools such as Auto Correlation, Loop Compression and Crossfade Looping which allow even the most difficult sounds to be easily looped.   Samples can be digitally spliced and mixed with other samples, and dynamically controlled from the keyboard using velocity and positional crossfading and switching functions. Advanced digital processing features such as Sample Rate Conversion, Compressor, Digital Parametric Equalizer and Digital Tuning allow you to shape raw samples more quickly and with greater precision than computer based systems. Additional digital processing functions include: Time Compression and Expansion, which shorten or lengthen the time of samples without changing the pitch; and Doppler/Pan, which allows you to move samples forward and backwards in space as well as from side to side. The Sonic Enhancer adds brilliance and cut to a sample, helping it to stand out in a mix.   The ESI contains 19 different filters types for each of its 64 channels. The digital filters are very “analog sounding” and implement the following filter types:   • 12, 24, or 36 dB/octave Lowpass filters with Resonance • 2nd & 4th order Highpass filters with Resonance • 2nd & 4th order Bandpass filters with Resonance • Contrary Bandpass filter • Three types of Swept EQ filters • Three Phasers and one Flanger filter with Resonance • Two morphing Vocal Formant filters • Bottom Feeder • Original ESi-32 24 dB/octave Lowpass filter   Modulation sources include three AHDSR envelope generators and a multi-wave LFO per channel, as well as full MIDI modulation control over virtually every parameter.   The ESI's unique Trigger Mode allows up to ten different samples to be triggered from the front panel without connecting a keyboard, making it an ideal tool for DJ's.   The ESI is 16 part multi-timbral which means you can create complex sequences and sound effects.   Four polyphonic audio outputs with integral submix returns allow you to process certain sounds separately and return them to the main outputs without using up precious mixer channels. Why did you design this DAC ? Nobody can be "told" what a good DAC is, you have to hear it for yourself... After searching myself for the "perfect" DAC, I stumbled on forum discussions about how these "vintage" DACs from Phillips® sounded so good. I was getting a little skeptical about those "natural" and "analog" statements for the sound of those converters, but as so many people seemed to make converging descriptions, I was left with the feeling it was not just a legend... I decided I had to build one, and try for myself ! As the result was more than surprising... I told myself: wow, I got to show that to my friends... And what most of my friends said: "can you build one for me ?" Call that a market study... Why do audiophiles do not like the sound of current oversampling DACs ? Oversampling DACs are textbook correct, right ? So they should sound perfect, no ? Well... While it is true that oversampling DACs are textbook correct, if you make the wrong assumptions about the human hearing system, you may end up making mistakes, even if you do the math right ! Let me give you a simple example: it is generally assumed we hear the spectrum of sounds, but can't hear the phase. Now try "binaural beats" on Google and listen for yourself. These clearly show the phase information IS sensed, AND remains present far inside the brain. So maybe the spectrum-only approach to DAC design is not telling the whole story... Traditional non-oversampling DACs from the past did not make any assumptions about hearing mechanisms, they just tried to replicate in analog what you fed them digitally as closely as possible...
