Quoted from Trashblitz website; Grundig GDM-121 Behold one of the foundational pillars of: The Grundig GDM-121, 1950s German vintage gold deluxe, and in all its glory quite probably responsible for this website. It is to this day the only gold coloured microphone we own, and it has such a cute little metal table stand with the Grundig four-leaf clover on it! And, more importantly, it was one of the first “vintage” microphones we acquired that did not simply sound old, funny or broken, and it piqued our interest in a very special way: It sounded fantastic, but there was buzz and hum and all sorts of unpleasant background noises mixed into the signal – and here my quest to  began. I found out that the GDM-121 is a high-impedance version of the Sennheiser MD21, a dynamic omnidirectional reporter microphone which is still being manufactured with only minor design updates, more than 60 years after its release in 1953. In terms of usefulness, this means that it is 100% functionally equal to the MD21, which was used as a reporter mic and in broadcasting. It has many advantages for these purposes – almost no handling noise, no proximity effect, incredibly sturdy (there was supposedly a show on the Sennheiser stage on some fair in the 1950s where an MD21 was dragged up and down a flight of stairs for hours, and it was still operational after this treatment). Since it was developed for vocal applications mainly, it has a presence boost above 3kHz and can withstand really high SPL. Much like with its cardioid sibling, the MD421, it’s virtually impossible to get a distorted signal out of this mic. In the studio, it can be used as a soft, jazzy kick drum mic, on guitar cabinets and on many instruments where you want to capture a mellow and natural ambient sound without very detailed transients or highs. This is because it is a large-diaphraghm dynamic omni, and as such probably unique in its properties even in most serious studio microphone collections.

The UMT 800 produces a clean, colorless sound, ideally suited for accurate recording of instrumental and vocal soloists in music studios, motion picture scoring stages and television broadcast studios. Two distinguishing characteristics of this microphone are its high sensitivity and outstanding signal to noise ratio. The pickup capsule is a pressure gradient transducer using dual membranes and a single brass back plate. The large diameter plastic membranes are sputtered with gold.
