The group has a distinct sound of its own, often led by Hornsby's bright piano chords and elastic tenor, with cohesive and evocative arrangements; there is new age music here, as well as jazz and country, and the mixture is presented naturally by musicians who seem to have been playing with each other for some time. Similarly, the songwriting has its own flavor. Hornsby wrote seven of the nine songs with his brother John Hornsby, and they create their own world, a working-class environment of longing and loneliness set against the background of the Virginia Tidewater area. (The album cover displays a sepia-toned photograph of the band set over another photograph of the long Chesapeake Bay Bridge.) The lyrics are lightly poetic and restrained, for the most part. The exception is the title song (written by Bruce Hornsby alone), a brave if somewhat clumsily written attack on the heartless right-wing politics of the mid-'80s, as the U.S. suffered through a second Reagan administration determined to roll back civil rights gains. The boldness of the statement and the lovely piano theme more than compensate for the awkward writing, however, making the song one of the album's most memorable. And that's saying a lot when the competition includes the engaging "Mandolin Rain" and the appealingly romantic "Every Little Kiss" (Hornsby's other sole writing credit). Perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that the music is so accomplished. Hornsby was no teenage neophyte when he made it, having kicked around the music business and gotten into his thirties, and the band includes such veterans as David Mansfield, who may be remembered as a member of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder troupe and the Alpha Band, as well as being a film composer. Sometimes a debut album just happens to be the first music most people get to hear by a mature talent, and that's the case here on the debut album of the year. Very Good Plus (VG+) – A few further faults are acceptable, but nothing that really compromises the record visually or audibly. A little rub, light inaudible marks, a little background crackle. Very Good (VG-) – It’s seen a bit of life, but is still usable. Light pops and clicks, an edge split, light visible scratches. You can still listen to it and enjoy looking at it, but it is visually and audibly USED. Good (G) – To be honest you’re making trouble for yourself here, as Good means Bad. Near Mint (NM) – The record has been on a shelf between other records. The vinyl looks glossy and clearly has only been played a few times. There are no marks on the vinyl and the whole package is complete. Excellent (E) – Same but I’d tolerate very light marks where the vinyl has been in and out of the inner sleeve a few times, or tiny signs of use generally. Very Good Plus (VG+) – A few further faults are acceptable, but nothing that really compromises the record visually or audibly. A little rub, light inaudible marks, a little background crackle. Very Good (VG-) – It’s seen a bit of life, but is still usable. Light pops and clicks, an edge split, light visible scratches. You can still listen to it and enjoy looking at it, but it is visually and audibly USED. Good (G) – To be honest you’re making trouble for yourself here, as Good means Bad. DURING THE 1970’s, the glorious Sunshine State of Georgia had been a fertile breeding ground for home grown Southern Rock nurturing, amongst others, the Allman Brothers Band, Grinderswitch and the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Doc Holliday, although not as universally well known as those big selling, stubble sporting whiskey soaked troubadours, were an important, nay essential, addition to that linage of respected and revered musicians. Developing a reputation as one of the hottest acts on what was affectionately termed the chittlin’ circuit DH, or Roundhouse as they had been known, eventually courted the ears of various power players in the record business. Wined and dined by the cigar chomping executives at A&M Records they were eventually signed to a major contract in 1980. Introduced to renowned English record producer ‘Colonel’ Tom Allom (Judas Priest, Strawbs, Nantucket) the coupling appeared an unlikely marriage but the natural  bonhomie of both parties proved hugely infectious helping to create one of the most impressive debut albums from a Southern Rock band since the glory days of the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Embraced by their peers and feted in the media, Doc Holliday’s debut album quickly became the must have Southern Rock record of 1981, a work that is still praised to this very day and cited as one of the highlights of the genre. 24-bit remastering from original source tapes, huge 4,000 word essay about the making of the album and 2 bonus tracks.
