"Shook Ones Part II" de Mobb Deep en fait partie. Au panthéon du rap américain, le titre des New Yorkais sorti en 1995 sur l’album The Infamous est une date clé dans la chronologie du genre. Par sa popularité, mais aussi par sa noirceur, celle qui dépeint la Grosse Pomme, ultra-réaliste, sans fioriture, dénué de second degré (contrairement au Wu-Tang Clan, par exemple). Une suite au courant initié par Nas et consorts, avènement du rap downtempo, du boom-bap comme on l’appelle souvent. Il y a quelque chose d’urgent dans les textes de Prodigy (décédé le 20 juin 2017) et de Havoc (aussi co-producteur du groupe), leur couleur est la même que celle des murs de la ville qu’ils dépeignent. Cette urgence, cette tension, est décuplée par l’instru. Tout d’abord, il y a cette nappe inquiétante qui surgit dès le début du morceau, annonciatrice de l’incendie, qui se déclenche lorsqu’on lance le morceau. Il s’agit d’un sample du titre "Kitty With The Bent Frame" de Quincy Jones, sorti en 1971. Une pièce faite d’expérimentations sonores analogiques, à mi-chemin entre le psychédélisme et le film d’horreur. Situé à 1 minute 16 du morceau d’origine, cet extrait n’est qu’un exemple parmi d’autres éléments piqués au titre de Quincy Jones.
