Generally, in the sense that Retrouvailles evinces, from beginning to end, that paradoxical mixture of solidarity in the pursuit of a collective goal, together with competitive individual excellence that makes jazz great. There is unstinting excellence and unflagging attention to detail; all the while knowing that no one is likely to get rich from this record, or this music, even though they really should. Specifically, because like many listeners of my advanced age, I fell in love with the music via a sound similar to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers—those little big bands (or are they large small ensembles?)— that mix genuine funk with elegant sophistication, delivered by exquisitely arranged multi-horn line-ups. De Preissac clearly draws on this inspiration as well. The expertly navigated changes in meter and tempo are right out of the Wayne Shorter-era Jazz Messengers. The always subtly surprising tonal colors in de Preissac's arrangements recall the arranging work of his compatriot, flautist Christophe dal Sasso's Exploration (Nocturne, 2006). There are further parallels. Drummer Andréa Michelutti, like Blakey, favors the booming lower range of his kit. De Preissac, for his part, calls to mind some of the best qualities of the playing of various Jazz Messengers pianists (Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton, Mulgrew Miller): a round, gospel-tinged sound, a slight florid tendency to the baroque, all the better to be heard over and between the large-ish ensemble. In de Preissac's case, these characteristics are overlaid with classical elements as well (as on his solo on "Minor's Mood"). As a brief cross-section of the players' strengths, listen to the sequence of short solos on "Jungleblues," which sounds for all the world like a Jazz Messengers show closer. Tenor saxophonist Jean-Christophe Béney is firmly in the tradition (though elsewhere on the record he favors ever so slightly "out" sonorities) and equally in control. As does trumpeter and composer Fabien Mary, who insistently splits the beats of his solos. For a bit of contrast, Michaël Chéret, on alto sax, heads for more angular territory, Eric Dolphy style, only to be followed by trombonist Mickaël Joussein's very cool sound on top of the rhythm. The leader takes a crystalline turn, followed by an arco episode from bassist Manuel Marchès and a brief trading of fours with drummer Michelutti. And that's not even the record's finest number. Je vous propose une rareté, qui vient de la collection prestigieuse d'un professionnel de la musique pop américaine. Elliott was born Irwin Elliott Zucker in Hartford, Connecticut. He was of Romanian Jewish descent.[1] Elliott graduated from the Hartt School of Music and worked as a jazz pianist in New York and Paris in the 1950s.[2][3] He continued his post-graduate studies in composition with Arnold Franchetti, Isadore Freed, Bohuslav Martinů, and Lukas Foss, but it was Judy Garland who brought Elliott to California to become an arranger for her television show. Elliott continued his run in television as music director for Andy Williams' long-running series and later produced and conducted the NBC television special Live From Studio 8H: 100 Years of America's Popular Music. He also wrote themes for television shows Night Court, and co-wrote the themes to Barney Miller and Charlie's Angels with Allyn Ferguson. He is listed in New Grove's Dictionary of American Music and was awarded an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, the University of Hartford's Hartt School of Music. Elliott was co-founder and music director of the American Jazz Philharmonic (formerly the New American Orchestra)[4] and creator of the Henry Mancini Institute.[5] The original name of the Orchestra was b'"'The Big Ob'"' and was the largest jazz orchestra of its kind featuring over 92 musicians. Elliott blended the classical European style orchestra with modern American jazz style. FOR CONNOISSEURS AND COLLECTOR'S ONLY  Mico Nissim a voulu se perdre dans sa mémoire, dans la tradition du jazz qu’il voudrait bousculer à l’aide d’un guide, Thelonious Monk en l’occurrence. Il en est de pire. « Labyrinthe quartet », ainsi se nomme son groupe, devient tout un programme. Une sorte de projection de cette filiation qui unit Nissim et Monk, le compositeur le plus borgésien qui soit, et la volonté d’être soi-même. Réunir un vibraphone, Stephan Caracci virtuose de ce curieux instrument, une contrebasse qui se fait basse électrique dans un hommage à Monk, Jean-Luc Ponthieux et une batterie, Mourad Benhammou qui sait tout de cet instrument emblématique du jazz, était un pari qui n’avait rien de pascalien. The Durutti Column - Vini Reilly - Factory - 70694,Factory - FACT 244 - France - 1989 The Durutti Column are an English post-punk group formed in Manchester(1978).The group is a project of guitarist & occasional pianist Vini Reilly who is often accompanied by Bruce Mitchell on drums and Keir Stewart on bass,keyboards & harmonica.They were among the first acts signed to the famous Label: Factory Records founded by Tony Wilson. The name was derived from a misspelling of the Durutti Column,an anarchist military unit in the Spanish Civil War named after Buenaventura Durutti. FOR CONNOISSEURS AND COLLECTOR'S ONLY  Mico Nissim a voulu se perdre dans sa mémoire, dans la tradition du jazz qu’il voudrait bousculer à l’aide d’un guide, Thelonious Monk en l’occurrence. Il en est de pire. « Labyrinthe quartet », ainsi se nomme son groupe, devient tout un programme. Une sorte de projection de cette filiation qui unit Nissim et Monk, le compositeur le plus borgésien qui soit, et la volonté d’être soi-même. Réunir un vibraphone, Stephan Caracci virtuose de ce curieux instrument, une contrebasse qui se fait basse électrique dans un hommage à Monk, Jean-Luc Ponthieux et une batterie, Mourad Benhammou qui sait tout de cet instrument emblématique du jazz, était un pari qui n’avait rien de pascalien.
