DURING THE mid 1970s the popularity of progressive rock was at an all time high with acts such as Yes, Jethro Tull and, especially, ELP enjoying huge album sales and playing to sold out crowds the world over. Of course, shadowing these giants of prog were a number of young upstarts keen to make a challenge for gold and glory, not least of these were American mid-west contenders Starcastle. The band’s carefully executed debut album attracted a number of converts, selling something in the region of a quarter of a million copies, resulting in Epic records taking a keener interest. In an effort to up the ante, so to speak, the band was sent into the studio (Morin Heights, Quebec) to record their next album with flamboyant and creative British producer Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, Journey, Foreigner). ‘Fountains Of Light’ is arguably Starcastle’s finest moment. Baker’s production is meticulous yet forceful, allowing the band to stretch out and take on the competition without sacrificing integrity or a natural melodic song writing ability. Packed out with hooks to die for and submerged in complex yet accessible arrangements, the album oozes charm and class. Housed in one of the most impressively designed album sleeves of the seventies ‘Fountains Of Light’ still presses all the right buttons. 24-bit remastering from original source tapes, 4,000 word essay about the making of the album, new interview with band and additional photos spread out over a 16 page full colour booklet. CLAUDE-JOSEPH PORTIER (1841-1910), Mosquée Sidi-Abdheraman, Algérie, Albumine - c.1870 ALGERIE - c.1870 Epreuve Albuminée collée sur carton 25 x 19 cm Claude-Joseph Portier dit Claudius Portier est un ancien élève de l'ENSAM d'Aix-en-Provence (1858-1862). Il étudie la photographie auprès d'Auguste Belloc avant d'installer un studio de photographie à Alger au 7 de la rue Napoléon. Il est l’un des premiers photographes professionnels installés à Alger, avec Alary et Geiser Alary. Il déclare être membre de la Société française de photographie (SFP) dans une annonce parue dans Akhbar, le Journal de l'Algérie du 19 juillet 1863. Il réalise une série de portraits, de scènes et de types, sous l'intitulé "L’Algérie pittoresque". Portier a annoncé en détail dans le journal Akhbar que depuis quelques années (vers 1863) qu’il avait façonné son entreprise comme "Photographie Nouvelle" et qu’il était ouvert tous les jours, sauf le vendredi (journée normale de fermeture dans les communautés musulmanes). Claude-Joseph Portier a participé à l’exposition universelle de Paris en 1867. En 1868, Portier, imitant un studio parisien à la mode de l'époque, offrait la possibilité de "photographie hippique" (photographies de cavaliers et leurs chevaux) et a déclaré qu'il "opérait lui–même". En 1878,il devient correspondant avec Jean Geiser pour la Compagnie Giraudon de Paris, la première agence photographique. He is one of the first professional photographers living in Algiers, with Alary and Geiser Alary. He declares to be a member of the French Society of Photography (SFP) in an advertisement published in Akhbar, the Journal de l'Algerie of July 19, 1863. He made a series of portraits, scenes and types, under the title "Picturesque Algeria". Claude-Joseph Portier participated in the Paris World Exhibition in 1867. He was one of the most talented photographers in Algiers and won a gold medal for his photographs.

It is not the person to be portrayed who is sharply reproduced, but the background. The portrayed persons are Buchwald's East Berlin artist friends, who are shown in their living environment, for example in their street or in front of their house. He portrayed them both during the day and at night and presents the photographs as a series in a 10-part tableau. The night shots were called Berliner Traum (Berlin Dream) and exhibited in the fall of 1989 in the installation Nachtkammer (Night Chamber), within the exhibition Akzente (Accents) in the Galerie Weißer Elefant.
