In the 1960s he accompanied Marlene Dietrich, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis and Charles Aznavour, and in 1970 added the tuba, working as a studio musician and recording with Michel Legrand, Vladimir Cosma, Michel Colombier and others. From 1973 to 1983 he accompanied Claude Nougaro with Eddie Louiss and Maurice Vander, and played in the orchestras of Martial Solal, Michel Portal and others.  In 1981 he formed his own group, the "Steckar Tubapack", and his first recording in 1982 won the Prix Boris Vian, awarded by the Académie de Jazz. Marc Steckar has recorded over twenty discs using the tuba and in 1990 he started to mix the tuba with other ensembles, big bands, brass bands, wind bands, and choirs. In 1994 he composed several concertos for tuba, euphoniums and trombones and in 1999 received the Sacem Prix Printemps. Il etudia la musicologie avec Guido Adler (1855-1941) a l'Universite l'Institut d'Histoire de la musique de Universite de Vienne puis, entre 1904 et 1908, il etudia la composition avec Arnold Schonberg (1874-1951), qui eut une tres grande influence sur sa musique. Vers 1920, Webern remplaca la libre atonalite par la technique plus stricte du dodecaphonisme imagine par Arnold Schoenberg; a partir de ce moment, sa musique se concentrera vers une organisation des sons non seulement d'apres leurs hauteurs, mais egalement d'apres leurs durees, dans de petites formes extremement concentrees et epurees. Soucieux de la sonorite de chaque instrument et de la combinaison de leurs timbres, il mit en place dans ses oeuvres une « melodie des couleurs » (Klangfarbenmelodie), procede qu'utilisera notamment Dmitri Chostakovitch (1906-1975) dans le final de sa quatrieme Symphonie. Avec Alban Berg (1885-1935) et Arnold Schonberg, Anton Webern forme ce que l'on a appele la Seconde Ecole de Vienne. En 1926, il fit la connaissance de la poetesse Hildegard Jone (1891-1963), sur les textes de laquelle Webern concevra l'ensemble de son importante production vocale. Il fut tue sur sa terrasse le 15 septembre 1945, a Mittersill pres de Salzburg, par un soldat americain. Anton Webern compte parmi les tres grands compositeurs de la premiere moitie du vingtieme siecle. Bien que son nom soit extremement connu des melomanes, sa musique l'est, helas, infiniment moins, etant tres peu jouee en concert, presque pas diffusee a la radio ou a la television, et meme, a l'exception de quelques oeuvres phares, peu enregistree. Parmi ses oeuvres majeures, on peut noter les « Variations » pour piano, « Quatre pieces » pour violon et piano, « Trois petites pieces » pour violoncelle et piano, un Trio a cordes, un Quatuor, « Cinq mouvements » et « Six Bagatelles pour Quatuor a cordes, un Quatuor pour violon, clarinette, saxophone tenor et piano, un Concerto pour flute, hautbois, clarinette, cor, trompette, trombone, violon, alto et piano, une « Passacaille », « Six pieces », Cinq pieces » et des « Variations » pour orchestre, une Symphonie, deux Cantates pour voi(x), choeur et orchestre, « Das Augenlicht » pour choeur mixte et orchestre, « Entflieht auf Leichten Kahnen » pour choeur a cappella sur un texte de Stefan George, « Cinq chants sacres » pour voix et petit ensemble, « Cinq canons » sur des textes latins pour soprano, clarinette et clarinette basse, « Trois melodies populaires sacrees » pour voix, violon, clarinette et clarinette basse, ainsi que de tres nombreux lieder. Ils ont enregistre des tonnes d'albums contrairement a leurs homologues anglais comme Walrus,Heaven,Rock Workshop,The Greatest Show on Earth,Pesky Gee,etc...qui ne sortiront qu'un seul album,deux avec beaucoup de chance.Si on a pu etre tres serieusement ebloui par les deux premiers opus de BS&T(surtout Child is father to the man;Ah!Al Kooper)et idem pour Chicago (surtout Chicago Transit Authority;Ah!Terry Kath)on a pu s'apercevoir par la suite que leur carriere etait inegale,mais ils eurent la chance de pouvoir continuer,et de nous offrir au milieu d'un ensemble passable,quelques titres voluptueux.Une derniere chose,les groupes americains(Cold Blood,Rastus,Matrix,Tower of Power,Ballinjack,etc..sonnent beaucoup plus jazz,blues et funk que leurs homologues anglais,qui ont plus une sonorite et demarche jazz prog. Revenons a nos amis de Satisfaction.Au depart,il y a la credibilite du fondateur Mike Cotton,trompettiste de jazz,qui ecume la scene anglaise avant de virer Rhythme and Blues vers 63 avec des groupes comme Mike Cotton Band ou Mike Cotton Sound(tournant avec les Four Tops,Stevie Wonder,etc...)Il recrute Derek Griffiths(guitare)ancien des Artwoods ou il frequentat Jon Lord et Keef Hartley,Lem Lubin(bass)ancien chanteur de Unit 4+2,ixieme combo liverpuldien,Nick Newall(sax tenor,alto et flute)John Beccham(trombone)et Bernie Higginson(drums)et tout ce beau monde va composer et ecrire l'ensemble de l'album,a part un titre.Des Just lay back and enjoy it,on sent que les cuivres vont prendre une part importante a l'affaire...jusqu'a l'inevitable(a l'epoque)solo de flute(le syndrome Ray Thomas qui a traumatise une generation avec Nights in white satin)suivi de l'amusant she follows the band(vecu?)type pop fin 60's.Le groupe se donne parfois du temps(5/7mn)pour developper ses idees comme pour Cold summer ou l'envoutant Sharing ou guitare et improvisation simultanee des cuivres nous menent sur les rives de l'onirique.On retiendra aussi le surprenant et"moraliste"You upset the Grace of living when you lie avec un performant solo d'alto de Nick Newall.Le duo vocal Lubin et Griffiths avec Higginson au dernier chorus sur Just like friends,nous offre un traitement "symphonise" du titre.L'album se clos avec Go through changes,ou tout le monde va au charbon,qui,un solo par ci,un larsen par la,on se retrouve avec un final big-bandesque. Les bonus tracks sont les deux singles qui avaient attires l'attention des gazettes a leur sortie.C'est juste un peu plus enleve dans le tempo,sans plus.L'instrumental Gregory shan't,saupoudre de percu rappelle l'intro de I'm a man de Chicago.La boucle est donc bouclee.Si cet album n'est pas d'une innovation transcendantale,il n'est pas pretentieux,ne cherchant surement pas a se prevaloir d'une legitimite culturelle.Il fait son travail d'album,nous apportant sa petite part de reve et de plaisir. Generally, in the sense that Retrouvailles evinces, from beginning to end, that paradoxical mixture of solidarity in the pursuit of a collective goal, together with competitive individual excellence that makes jazz great. There is unstinting excellence and unflagging attention to detail; all the while knowing that no one is likely to get rich from this record, or this music, even though they really should. Specifically, because like many listeners of my advanced age, I fell in love with the music via a sound similar to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers—those little big bands (or are they large small ensembles?)— that mix genuine funk with elegant sophistication, delivered by exquisitely arranged multi-horn line-ups. De Preissac clearly draws on this inspiration as well. The expertly navigated changes in meter and tempo are right out of the Wayne Shorter-era Jazz Messengers. The always subtly surprising tonal colors in de Preissac's arrangements recall the arranging work of his compatriot, flautist Christophe dal Sasso's Exploration (Nocturne, 2006). There are further parallels. Drummer Andréa Michelutti, like Blakey, favors the booming lower range of his kit. De Preissac, for his part, calls to mind some of the best qualities of the playing of various Jazz Messengers pianists (Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton, Mulgrew Miller): a round, gospel-tinged sound, a slight florid tendency to the baroque, all the better to be heard over and between the large-ish ensemble. In de Preissac's case, these characteristics are overlaid with classical elements as well (as on his solo on "Minor's Mood"). As a brief cross-section of the players' strengths, listen to the sequence of short solos on "Jungleblues," which sounds for all the world like a Jazz Messengers show closer. Tenor saxophonist Jean-Christophe Béney is firmly in the tradition (though elsewhere on the record he favors ever so slightly "out" sonorities) and equally in control. As does trumpeter and composer Fabien Mary, who insistently splits the beats of his solos. For a bit of contrast, Michaël Chéret, on alto sax, heads for more angular territory, Eric Dolphy style, only to be followed by trombonist Mickaël Joussein's very cool sound on top of the rhythm. The leader takes a crystalline turn, followed by an arco episode from bassist Manuel Marchès and a brief trading of fours with drummer Michelutti. And that's not even the record's finest number. Generally, in the sense that Retrouvailles evinces, from beginning to end, that paradoxical mixture of solidarity in the pursuit of a collective goal, together with competitive individual excellence that makes jazz great. There is unstinting excellence and unflagging attention to detail; all the while knowing that no one is likely to get rich from this record, or this music, even though they really should. Specifically, because like many listeners of my advanced age, I fell in love with the music via a sound similar to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers—those little big bands (or are they large small ensembles?)— that mix genuine funk with elegant sophistication, delivered by exquisitely arranged multi-horn line-ups. De Preissac clearly draws on this inspiration as well. The expertly navigated changes in meter and tempo are right out of the Wayne Shorter-era Jazz Messengers. The always subtly surprising tonal colors in de Preissac's arrangements recall the arranging work of his compatriot, flautist Christophe dal Sasso's Exploration (Nocturne, 2006). There are further parallels. Drummer Andréa Michelutti, like Blakey, favors the booming lower range of his kit. De Preissac, for his part, calls to mind some of the best qualities of the playing of various Jazz Messengers pianists (Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton, Mulgrew Miller): a round, gospel-tinged sound, a slight florid tendency to the baroque, all the better to be heard over and between the large-ish ensemble. In de Preissac's case, these characteristics are overlaid with classical elements as well (as on his solo on "Minor's Mood"). As a brief cross-section of the players' strengths, listen to the sequence of short solos on "Jungleblues," which sounds for all the world like a Jazz Messengers show closer. Tenor saxophonist Jean-Christophe Béney is firmly in the tradition (though elsewhere on the record he favors ever so slightly "out" sonorities) and equally in control. As does trumpeter and composer Fabien Mary, who insistently splits the beats of his solos. For a bit of contrast, Michaël Chéret, on alto sax, heads for more angular territory, Eric Dolphy style, only to be followed by trombonist Mickaël Joussein's very cool sound on top of the rhythm. The leader takes a crystalline turn, followed by an arco episode from bassist Manuel Marchès and a brief trading of fours with drummer Michelutti. And that's not even the record's finest number.
