The U220 is an industry standard and a reliable workhorse in any studio. A classic synth, which thanks also to the large number of extra sounds available on Roland  expansion boards, delivers amazing power and variety.  The U-series uses a type of synthesis called RS-PCM - which stands for ReSynthesized Pulse Code Modulation, and it's Roland's 2nd generation sampling technique. It is based on high-quality samples. The structure of this synth reminds of the D-50 and its tones, partials and patches. Here we have 128 basic components called "tones", that can be used to build "timbres". Timbres can then be combined in various ways to build "patches". This is a fairly elaborate process which seems daunting at the beginning, but fairly easy once you are used to the way the U-220's OS works. Besides instrument waveforms/tones, the U-220 also features drum samples. They are fairly punchy and typically with an 80s feel. You can certainly use these percussion tones to form patches - indeed, some of the more creative factory patches use drum sounds as starting points. One drawback of the U-series is that there are no filters. The editing options are few and limited to choosing tone, setting level, pitch, vibrato, and effects parameters - so clearly the U-series is not the best option if you want a full-fledged synthesizer that you can edit to the max. This is definitely a plug 'n' play, performance synth: this module responds beautifully to velocity messages, and also the aftertouch is incredibly responsive and guarantees "felt" performances. It's also 6+1 (for rhythm) polytimbric, so you can use it to compose full songs. The U-series can also be expanded thanks to two slots for the SN-U110-series of PCM cards, which really open up all kinds of possibilities for this machine. It's also interesting to note that - from what I can hear - many of the waveforms in the U-series ROM ended up in the hugely successful Sound Canvas series - which largely contributed to the success of the GM (General MIDI) standard in the early 90s. Neuron VS's main screen, showing the two Resynators, Blender, and Shapers (envelope generators). The colour coding of the two X-Y controllers indicates which of the three parameter levels is being accessed. If you pined after the innovative Neuron in 2003, but couldn't afford the £3500 price tag, check out Neuron VS; it packs most of the original synth engine into a £500 software instrument and throws in a distinctive hardware controller. Once upon a time, hi-tech music manufacturers would release synths or workstations in two or three different keyboard sizes, and then add a rackmount version to the range later, allowing users to add the basic sounds and features of the product to their studio racks without taking up too much room. But times are changing, and it's surely a sign of our increasingly 'virtual' age that Hartmann, whose Neuron was one of the largest, loudest, and most expensive hardware synths of recent times, have chosen to aim straight at the computer with their second release. Neuron VS will not fit in your racks, but instead installs on your Mac or PC: it's a VST/AU-format virtual instrument that offers the original keyboard's core technology for a fraction of the Neuron's price.Neuron VS running as a plug-in under Cakewalk Sonar, with the Nuke hardware controller/dongle in the foreground.Photo: Mark Ewing Actually, it's perhaps not surprising that Hartmann have made this move: as was noted in the August 2003 SOS review of the original keyboard, Neuron is based on a PC architecture, and one of its main developers is also the man behind German software house Prosoniq, which must have made developing the plug-in easier. Whatever the motivation, software has to be a more economical option for a developer, even if, as in the case of Neuron VS, the software comes with a hardware controller. Tooling up for a rack Neuron, on the other hand, would have produced another mega-thousand-pound product. Refreshing The Neurons The original Neuron created quite a stir when it was announced by promising a new approach to synthesis and sound creation, and anyone who heard one, as I did while attending the Frankfurt Music Fair during its launch year, couldn't ignore the range and volume of sounds it produced. I was continuously reminded of the Neuron's impact as it swooped and roared in the background of an interview that I recorded at that show. Now the attractive concept of running that technology from your computer desktop has created a stir of its own. The Neuron VS package consists of two parts, one hardware and one software (as this review was approaching completion, a second software component, Modelmaker, was added to the bundle — see the boxout for more on this). The hardware element is the USB-driven Nuke remote control unit, which offers a single stick controller — the X-Y joystick, of which there are four on the original Neuron keyboard — and four assignable continuous controllers. Neuron VS, the software component, is essentially the synth engine from the original Neuron in plug-in form. Obviously, the keyboard version has the advantage of its own dedicated hardware, so its performance is not dependent on the power of your CPU or the amount of RAM you have installed, as is the case with Neuron VS. The keyboard version also offers surround-sound audio compatibility, future plans for audio-input processing and four-part multitimbrality. But the rest remains largely the same. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the original, a quick recap is in order.

Grey Matter E! for DX7II is a circuit board attached to the DX7IIFD, DX7IID  synthesizer main board that turns an otherwise normal DX7II-FD or DX7II-D into a fully featured workstation machine.     Expanded internal Memory   E! enlarges the internal RAM memory of your DX by four times and allows it to hold 256 single sounds (called Voices) and 128 Performance memories (multi-voice combinations).   The total internal memory is divided into 4 Banks. Each Bank holds 64 Voices and 32 Performances    - Bank 1 = 64 Voices/32 Performances  - Bank 2 = 64 Voices/32 Performances  - Bank 3 = 64 Voices/32 Performances  - Bank 4 = 64 Voices/32 Performances   Voices from all four banks can be combined into any of the Performance memories, meaning you're not limited to Voices found in just one Bank when creating a Performance Combination   Octal Mode Octal Mode is one of the most outstanding features of the E! expansion because it turns your DX7II into an 8 channel multitimbral sound module. With this capability, the keyboard can receive MIDI information on 8 separate channels directly from the internal SE!quencer or from an external controller. Each channel can be assigned a different Voice, so now your DX can produce eight different sounds at once.   Splits and Layers With E! you can go far beyond the simple two way split and layer combinations of original DX7II. Youâ??ll find that there are Performance Modes that let you layer 4 voices or create elaborate 8 way splits. There's even a floating split mode, where the split point follows the movements of your right hand up and down the keyboard.   Accompaniment Modes There are two accompaniment modes that let you to trigger preset chords or moving patterns by playing just one key.    - Player Mode - Using this mode you can create elaborate moving accompaniments by triggering a different arpeggio or bass line pattern by playing one key.     - Chord Mode - This mode lets you trigger a different chord voicing (such as major, minor, 7th or 9th chord) when you press a key.    8 Channel Controller With El, your DX is capable of transmitting up to 8 MIDI channels from the keyboard and 16 channels from the sequencer.       Expanded Data Management Functions With the Expanded Memory and increased Performance and Sequencer functions, the Data Management operations are likewise augmented. In transferring data to and from the disk, you now have the option of Saving and Loading a Single Bank of Voices and Performance memories or all 4 at once.      Two Primary Modes All the E! functions are collected under two fundamental menu headings:   - Engine   - SE!quencer   Engine   The heart of the E! system is called the Engine. As the central workhorse menu, it contains most of the new E! functions including all Performance modes, multitimbral and MIDI controller features and the special accompaniment modes. Every parameter within the Engine menu is programmable. This means you can save any multitimbral combination, split or layer combination or sequencer song to one of the 128 Performance memories and call them up with the touch of one button!   Sequencer With E! you now have a 16 track MIDI recorder built into your DX. Eight of these tracks can be assigned to trigger eight internal DX Voices, while the others can be used to trigger external MIDIsound modules.   The recording and editing features compare with some of the best computer software programs available. The SE!quencer is pattern based, meaning you record short segments of data called Patterns and then link them into a complete arrangements called Songs. The Internal memory holds a maximum of 22,000 MIDI events, which can be reserved for 1 Song or divided between up to 10 Songs. The disk on a DX7lI-FD serves to expand the internal memory by 10 times the maximum limit, or 220,000 MIDI events divided
