Sonic Tonic: A Journey Of 10+ years Becomes A Product Born of Experience, Friendships b'&' Love Of MusicBeing in business for nearly 15 years, you get to meet, and share experience/knowledge with some really great people. Some well known, some relatively unknown. This post is about the birth of a product, I call it Sonic Tonic, as a culmination of over 10 years working with Mr. Jack Bybee, and a fellow group of like minded music lovers whom I will call my b'"'Tweak Gurusb'"'. A Bit of Mad Science TooI owe a great deal to these people. Together through our love of music and what we think it should sound like when reproduced, we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with audio through very unconventional means. We are mad scientists, given completely over to the dark side. The experiences we share are available to you, if you decide to trust our experiences, our anecdotal evidence, and our ears. It's a lot to ask. I know. Hell I'm about as scientific minded as they get when it comes to anything else except audio. That's because my ears and the ears of my colleagues/friends have heard things. Things we can't measure (with conventional tools/methods), things we can't really put into adequate words, but can only hint at with rambling cliches. It's wholly inadequate, but I've found a way to get beyond words, hype, bullshit and the like. I let you put my experiences to the test, try them in your own system on your own time, and see if they are for your ears. It's simple, costs little to do, and cuts through the crap. Everything Makes A DifferenceI have been experimenting with crystals, metals, and other materials in respect to the effect they have on signal transmission and room acoustics. Let me just say that everything, EVERYTHING in your listening room has some effect on the sound of your audio system, and in more ways than you think. Even the air in the room, it all affects performance, and can be altered. You've seen my experimentation with Copper rods (still ongoing, with more blogging to come...) alongside conventional acoustic treatments within a listening space. This is a fantastic, and inexpensive tweak. The copper brings openness, naturalness and enhances dynamics. Even a well acoustically treated room. That was my first unconventional means of attacking a common problem. inexpensive to try, and I make no money from it. It is simply me sharing something that brings more excitement to the listening experience. A 1/2b'"' copper rod suspended from my ceiling. Playing The FieldThen there are the crystal based products. Not necessarily cheap, but that is about to change... For the crystal based products there are of course Jack B's latest inventions: Room Neutralizers, Quantum Signal Enhancers. Let's not forget the Stein Harmonizer system, Synergistic Research HFT, UEF, Audio Magic P.E.A. and PulseGen technology. All of these use crystals, resonance and either are energized by or produce a b'"'fieldb'"' that enhances certain aspects of music reproduction. All do something to the sound, or to the listener perhaps, that enhances or at the very least changes the sonics of a system and/or room. These have all been an inspiration of sorts, and I have listened to them all. I have much respect for these manufacturers. It takes hundreds, even thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars to develop a product such as this. That's before one dime is made. Think about that the next time you read or hear someone bashing a manufacturer for egregious pricing in light of parts count and cost. It's the original idea, the research, the time, and money invested beforehand with no guarantee of return. This needs to be calculated into the MSRP in addition to the material cost of production. Then one has to project how many will be sold (good luck with that in the audio industry) and hopefully come up with a number that will produce a reasonable profit. But I digress.... Rolling My OwnMy own experimentation began by placing large crystals of En savoir plus Collaboration commerciale.

Schoeps DSP-4 KFM 360 This unit is in good cosmetic condition and turns on, but I did not test it myself. I bought it used from the exclusive Schoeps French distributor Areitec in 2017, so it should be in good working condition. Invoice is available. I never had any opportunity to use this fantastic piece of gear. Sold as is. Comes in its original Schoeps wooden box with a Schuko power cord (France), a stereo XLR cable (5 pins) and a XLR split Y cable. The DSP-4 KFM 360 is a 24-bit processor unit. Together with the sphere microphone KFM 360 and two bidirectional compact condenser microphones CCM 8L, it forms a compact 5.1 surround recording system with excellent spatial imaging capability. The processor derives the six 5.1 surround channels from only four microphone signals (the two pressure transducers in the KFM 360 plus two figure-8s) and offers a wide range of selectable settings. The primary characteristics of the DSP-4 KFM 360 are:  – analog and digital inputs and outputs  – integrated 48 Volt phantom powering and microphone preamplification  – built-in equalization for the microphones  – digital processing can be performed during or after the actual recording  – analog control “feel”  – capability to store control “presets”  – directionality of the front and rear channel microphones is independently selectable  – the stereo basis width of the front channels is independently variable  – adjustable time delay and low-pass filtering for the rear channels  – sampling rate 44.1, 48 or 96 kHz, 24 bit In addition to amplifying the microphone signals, in the “B: SURR” operating mode the DSP-4 KFM 360 provides compensation for the low-frequency response of the figure-8 microphones and appropriate diffuse-field equalization for the pressure transducers. The front-channel outputs result from summing the outputs of the pressure transducers with the outputs of the figure-8s, while the rear-channel outputs result from subtracting these signals (see drawing on next page). The resulting “virtual microphones” face frontward and backward as do the actual figure-8s. The directional patterns of the front- and rear-facing “virtual microphones” may be set independently, from omnidirectional through cardioid all the way to figure-8 (though the extreme settings are of only limited usefulness). This permits flexible adaptation to the particular acoustic conditions of the recording venue, since the choice of directional pattern affects the amount of reverberant energy that will be picked up. If the unprocessed microphone signals are recorded (four channels), the effective directional settings can be chosen retroactively during post-production playback. The center channel signal is derived from the front channels by a matrix. An additional channel contains only a low-frequency signal up to 80 Hz, which is obtained by summing the pressure transducer outputs and reducing the total level by 6 dB. To prevent the disturbing effect of rear channel localization of sound sources, the rear channel signals can be reduced in level, delayed and/or processed by an adjustable low-pass filter. In addition to these primary functions, each selector switch also has a secondary function that allows, for example, the relative front-to-back channel gain or the left/right balance to be adjusted. While recording there is also a monitoring function which permits twelve different signals to be heard through Output III, as determined by the set- ting of the REC MONITOR knob.

Minolta Dynax 5 35mm film SLR with Minolta 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 D zoom lens, with front cap. Sold for parts or repair as it has some faults.  This camera kit is in good external condition, with some general signs of use. When checked with batteries (not included) the camera turns on, fires well and appears to operate normally. However the function dial on the front is not working properly. It's stiff to operate, sometimes it turns easily, sometimes not. It works, but it can be quite difficult to use. The viewfinder and focusing screen have quite a few dust spots. The mirror and lens mount are good, with minor signs of use, the film chamber is clean and the shutter looks OK. The lens is in good external condition, with light signs of use. There are mildew spots and specks of dust on the internal glass. The iris blades are free of oil and snappy, the zoom and focus barrels move smoothly. The focus works well in manual or auto modes, and it looks sharp through the viewfinder. Pentacon 29mm f2.8 manual focus lens M42 mount. Not working, in poor condition, sold for parts or repair. This lens is in OK external condition, with some general signs of use and age. The glass is very scratched, particularly on the front, and there is a lot of dust inside. The rear lens group is completely loose, it falls out if the lens is upside down. The aperture blades are clean and free of oil, the iris is snappy, and the aperture ring clicks correctly through the stops. The auto/manual iris switch works. Soligor Tele-Auto 135mm f2.8 manual focus lens, Miranda mount, with front and rear caps. Untested, sold for parts or repair. This lens is in very good external condition, with some light signs of use. The little lever sticking out of the side of the lens mount is quite loose, it looks like it needs to be tightened up. The glass is clean and unscratched, with some light signs of use, and a few internal specks of dust. The aperture blades are clean and free of oil, the iris is snappy, and the aperture ring clicks correctly through the stops. The focus is very smooth. I have not tested this lens as I don;'t have a Miranda body, so I don't know if it's fully functional or not, sold for parts or repair. All the time the Sagem MyDual Radio700 is powered up even without a station selected the front screen will display a small top line of year, date and day with a large (four time the size) bottom line showing the time in 24 hour format. It is 20x10x14cm maximum, the right side is the larger being circular and the single speaker with a fine silver/grey mesh the rest of the unit is grey. The display is 7.3x3.5cm with white lettering on a blue background. Outputs on the back are for earbuds, liner out, Ethernet, FM aerial (supplied) and the power lead. There is a status LED that glows green but in most cases this will not even be seen and finally a push button on/off switch. Neither side or the bottom have any connections while the front has a USB stick socket between the LCD display and the speaker. This leaves the top this has a total of eight buttons, five arranged in the ubiquitous joystick combination and three others all clearly labelled. There is a 30 key remote control, however for most actions the eight buttons on top of the unit are all you need. The one exception I have found is entering your WEP or WPA code that needs the numeric (mobile phone type) input on the remote. It finds all the wireless networks in range you select the one you want and assuming it is encrypted then you enter your passcode. It remembers this so next time you return power to the unit although you need to move through the same screens and select the wireless network it then shows the passcode, here I think it should not display the actual code maybe just some dots as the passcode is there for anyone to see. Ethernet is simpler as it is just a matter of connecting an Ethernet cable between the unit and a router. There are literally thousands of Internet radio stations are these are split into Genres. On the Station list there are four choices Locations, New Stations, Popular Stations and Genres. There are 56 Genres listed, as regular readers will know jazz is my passion and there are 100 or these. Select what you want and after a few seconds of buffering you will be listening to what you have chosen, it could be in UK or America or New Zealand in fact anywhere in the world. I found the sound quality good. The FM radio was not as brilliant, there are two sensitivities and even with the supplied wire lead extended fully on the lesser setting it found three stations and thirteen in most sensitive so lots of stations are not found. It then lists the frequencies and in some cases the name of the station beside them. The actual reception quality varied. Lack of space prevents me from giving much detail about the other features, the Alarm Clock (choice of two) is easily set as in the Sleep Timer. The MP3 player works without problem and using it as a Media Server is logical. There is a twenty page Installation Guide that should get you going and also covers using Windows Media Player 11 on your PC. My one real gripe is your passcode being displayed anytime power is restored note I mean the back on/off switch and not the power switch on the top that is really only standby mode.
