La mécanique de jeu est similaire au jeu Hansa de l'auteur primé Michael Schacht, mais avec des composants de toute beauté. Cette version comprend une carte supplémentaire, des objets Hansa promotionnels et tous les nouveaux pouvoirs de guilde variables. Dans Traders of the Air, deux à quatre joueurs représentent des guildes de commerce steampunk sur une planète lointaine, toujours à la recherche d'une opportunité d'acquérir des biens de valeur. Parcourant ensemble la planète à bord d'un vaisseau à vapeur, les guildes doivent mettre en place des réseaux de contrats de guilde sur les villes de la planète pour revendre les marchandises aux moments les plus avantageux afin d'augmenter leur pouvoir et leur prestige. Dans Traders of the Air, chaque action compte, le jeu est mécaniquement assez simple mais maîtriser les stratégies demandera de la pratique et de la réflexion.
