Sonic Tonic: A Journey Of 10+ years Becomes A Product Born of Experience, Friendships b'&' Love Of MusicBeing in business for nearly 15 years, you get to meet, and share experience/knowledge with some really great people. Some well known, some relatively unknown. This post is about the birth of a product, I call it Sonic Tonic, as a culmination of over 10 years working with Mr. Jack Bybee, and a fellow group of like minded music lovers whom I will call my b'"'Tweak Gurusb'"'. A Bit of Mad Science TooI owe a great deal to these people. Together through our love of music and what we think it should sound like when reproduced, we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with audio through very unconventional means. We are mad scientists, given completely over to the dark side. The experiences we share are available to you, if you decide to trust our experiences, our anecdotal evidence, and our ears. It's a lot to ask. I know. Hell I'm about as scientific minded as they get when it comes to anything else except audio. That's because my ears and the ears of my colleagues/friends have heard things. Things we can't measure (with conventional tools/methods), things we can't really put into adequate words, but can only hint at with rambling cliches. It's wholly inadequate, but I've found a way to get beyond words, hype, bullshit and the like. I let you put my experiences to the test, try them in your own system on your own time, and see if they are for your ears. It's simple, costs little to do, and cuts through the crap. Everything Makes A DifferenceI have been experimenting with crystals, metals, and other materials in respect to the effect they have on signal transmission and room acoustics. Let me just say that everything, EVERYTHING in your listening room has some effect on the sound of your audio system, and in more ways than you think. Even the air in the room, it all affects performance, and can be altered. You've seen my experimentation with Copper rods (still ongoing, with more blogging to come...) alongside conventional acoustic treatments within a listening space. This is a fantastic, and inexpensive tweak. The copper brings openness, naturalness and enhances dynamics. Even a well acoustically treated room. That was my first unconventional means of attacking a common problem. inexpensive to try, and I make no money from it. It is simply me sharing something that brings more excitement to the listening experience. A 1/2b'"' copper rod suspended from my ceiling. Playing The FieldThen there are the crystal based products. Not necessarily cheap, but that is about to change... For the crystal based products there are of course Jack B's latest inventions: Room Neutralizers, Quantum Signal Enhancers. Let's not forget the Stein Harmonizer system, Synergistic Research HFT, UEF, Audio Magic P.E.A. and PulseGen technology. All of these use crystals, resonance and either are energized by or produce a b'"'fieldb'"' that enhances certain aspects of music reproduction. All do something to the sound, or to the listener perhaps, that enhances or at the very least changes the sonics of a system and/or room. These have all been an inspiration of sorts, and I have listened to them all. I have much respect for these manufacturers. It takes hundreds, even thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars to develop a product such as this. That's before one dime is made. Think about that the next time you read or hear someone bashing a manufacturer for egregious pricing in light of parts count and cost. It's the original idea, the research, the time, and money invested beforehand with no guarantee of return. This needs to be calculated into the MSRP in addition to the material cost of production. Then one has to project how many will be sold (good luck with that in the audio industry) and hopefully come up with a number that will produce a reasonable profit. But I digress.... Rolleiflex 2.8C Xenotar + Rolleinar 2 + Accessories. It does have few cleaning marks.   Shutter: The Shutter works fine, all speed correct The aperture iris uses 10 baldes. Of course both speed selection and aperture ring works smoothly. The timer works well.   The front plate is not bended and is perfectly aligned with the film plane. The focusing it smooth.   The advance lever is smooth and the counter works well. There is no light leaks It was equipped at some point in its life with a rolleikin to use 35mm film. Today it remains only the 35mm film counter on the side. I learned the hard way that if you push it, it starts spacing the views for 35mm. To get it out, push it 36 times to get back to “0”. If you only use 120 film, just leave it on “0”, then it will space the views for 6x6 photos.   Please note: -The shutter lock (plastic) was broken and fixed. Looks ugly, but works perfectly -The flash lock (plastic), was broken and lost. The flash socket still work, but you can’t lock it.   Accessories: - Original Lens cap   - Rolleinar 2 with its pouch The rolleinar 2 is a closeup filter. Not as strong as the rolleinar 3 which is best suited for macro, but stronger than the rolleinar 1. It is very nice for portraits. You can come close to 40cm to 70cm from your subject. The big part is for the viewing lens (red dot on top when locked on the camera, it will correct the parallax) The small part is for the taking lens. It locks one in the other for transportation   - Bay III to 52mm thread adapter To be honest, you can buy a lot of expensive accessories for Rolleiflex, but this one is just a must have. Once locked, you can add any 52mm filter or lens hood that you want.   - 52mm thread lens hood. Well it’s kind of mandatory with the bay III adapter   The setup: I used this camera without any issues. It is not a brand new camera. It has its marks of use. But it was used with care and love. If you are looking for a piece of museum, please look elsewhere. This was my setup and it proved to be versatile. Maybe it will suits your needs. It is an heavy camera, keep this in mind while taking it with you.     I have added few shots taken with this camera. Ask your question before bidding. You will be able to experience an unmatched image quality(the sensor is still ranked an all-time #2 in Dxomark with an excellent score of 101, still dwarfing any full format wonder of 2020…), with a body build to last and stay with you for serious studio work, or the wildest adventure outdoor setup. Ricoh-Pentax is legendary for its weather sealing, and so is this body. To be honest, it is only for health issues that I am selling. I tried the Hasselblad mirrorless X1D, the fuji GFX50s (dreadfull experience with the laziest AF in the world and a poor battery life), theGFX100 (much better experience, but I wasn’t impressed by image quality and rendering…must be the glass), and I always come back to the Pentax 645z. I have never been impressed by Fuji GFX image quality. I Liked the Leica S (again it must be the glass and the lens design that make the real differences), the Hasselblad was interesting, but way too expensive comparing with the Pentax, not even considering the weather sealing and the very long list of ergonomic treats you get from Pentax engineers. It is about creating images and only this, it is not a smartphone. It’s a photographer tool, not a toy. In 2018 I was disappointed by Canon full-frame offering. The5d4 was too expensive and there wasn’t a gap in quality from any canon full Frame since 5d2 and I decided to enter the medium format world with the 645z. I already tried it in Japan in 2015 and I said “well, this would be nice…”. After having bought this camera with literally undying battery life (what a refreshment comparing with all electronic newest camera), I just went to my garden and started right away the 120mm macro. I was dumb because I had no AF at all, but discovered the cleverest mechanism for AF/MF switch to date:sliding the focus ring. There is a slight click and I was all set. Yes the screw motor lenses are a bit noisy, but it’s nice and at the first picture of a random blossoming flower…God almighty, it was like a facepalm, struck by beauty and sheer quality. I decided to keep on the Pentax 645z journey and collect some lenses. The 28-45mm was very soon my favorite landscape lens,equivalent to 22-35mm, extraordinary quality, stabilized, totally weather sealed…those words should surprise you as medium format+stabilized lens+weather sealing…seldom go together. Then came the 90mm macro f2.8, stabilized as well and weather sealed. This may simply be the best lens I’ve ever used for portrait work, incredibly smooth yet detailed. Bokeh is one thing but volumes,transition, tones, textures, it’s just amazing for portrait, and pack shots as well. I wanted to try tele lenses, and acquired the 300mm “star”lens. Build like real lenses with metal, feels solid. Image quality was amazing too, I capture incredible shots of tigers with it, and this lens can really tell stories and add a unique identity. All the lenses are incredible, sharp, and each with unique though I must admit the 150mm f2.8, even though hailed as the portrait king by some other photographers, was often left on the shelf. I discover the craft of using 80s East-Germany Isco lenses for the Pentax and I assembled my favorite lens with a 135mm F2projector lens. This one is really a collectible, manual focus only, it cannot go to the infinity (but for portrait, who cares?) require a good amount of focus skills and mastery of yourself, but it is a very rewarding lens. After all,Helmut Newton shot in medium format with manual focus only, and look at his work…With this wide aperture and unique look, it sad to let it go. Two further footswitches (one of which can be a dual up/down pedal) can be connected via rear-panel jacks to control Phrase Shift, which I'll talk about a little later, and Reverse, which does just what it says — plays the recorded loop backwards. Although this unit is designed for use mainly with guitar, there's also an unbalanced jack mic input, though I wouldn't recommend this for serious recording work. However, it is useful for those high-street busking sessions with a digeridoo (or whatever) and you can even use the mic and instrument inputs at the same time if need be. The output of the unit is strictly mono and power can come from an optional PSU or from six AA batteries. Digital units like this tend to be fairly hungry on batteries, so the mains adaptor is a good idea — unless you're busking in the high street using a battery amplifier! Working with loops can be a problem, because if you get an overdub wrong, you generally have to go back to square one. However, that's no problem here, as there's a very welcome Undo/Redo button. To help timing, there's also a useful metronome and a facility for having the loop recording end precisely on a beat rather than exactly where you hit the pedal. This is really helpful in creating tight-sounding loops. Once a loop has been recorded, its tempo can be changed without altering its pitch, though as with most time/pitch manipulation there's only so far you can go before the processing artefacts start to show. Other live performance niceties include the ability to store multiple Phrases, then decide whether each should play back as a 'one shot' performance or loop continuously. Because this pedal can store multiple Phrases, and store them after power down, you could load up a few backing tracks into it (from CD, your computer or any other suitable audio source) ready to perform. There's no way to back up loops other than to record the audio output, though, and from my own perspective the ability to dump and load audio files via USB would have made a lot of sense. Up for sale is a Selmer Chorus 80J Trumpet in Lacquer Finish. These aren't made anymore and don't come up for sale often. Rare ocasion to own a piece of history and one of the greatest trumpets ever made. Selmer quit making these fine horns in 2011. So you can't get these anymore. These are terrific horns. Spectacular tone. Serial number is around 91XXX. So it's one of the last ones Selmer made. Very warm, beautiful sounding horn with smooth and very fast valves. Very good compression. The trumpet is in remarkable condition. Lacquer is 100% and not a dent, ding. One little scratch on the valves casing. Slightly traces of playing. Only a few years ago, photographers and videographers were asking for special effect filters. Today, they ask for COKIN filters. The Cokin Creative Filter System adds to your images in ways that simply cannot be recreated in photo editing software after the picture is taken.  Cokin System Explained. This system is a range of holders, adaptors and filters. Most filters are square or rectangular, rectangular filters are usually graduated, and can be slid to get the graduation you require, for example correcting exposure for skies, or adding a colour effect to a  part of the scene. The holder can also hold some that need to rotate, for example circular polarisers. Filter systems come in different sizes, to fit different widths of lenses.  To use the system you need a holder, and there are several to choose from, including additional holders that can be stacked, an adaptor ring, this is used to connect the holder to the filter ring size of your choice. You can have more than one of these so it can be used with different lenses or use one larger size and step up rings to convert to this size and whatever filters you want to use.

Canon Canonet ql17 gIII 35 mm range finder camera  lens: 40 mm f1.7  The condition of the body is mint: no scratches except a tiny barely visible one under the camera, no marks, no dents, no smudges, the leather is beautiful and the overall appearance of the camera is great (see for yourself in the photos). The battery compartment has been professionally modified so that it doesn't take the old batteries anymore. Instead the canonet now takes lr9 or similar 1.5v alkaline batteries that are much cheaper, durable and easier to find.  The camera fires at all speeds, the lightmeter works as it should as well, the film advance lever is nice and smooth.   Viewfinder condition: the camera has been serviced recently for cleaning of the viewfinder. It is now really beautiful and bright with nice clear framelines (see picture) PLEASE READ: however, the viewfinder framelines are slightly tilted so if you set the camera on a table, they won't be perfectly parallel to the table but you can easily get used to it like I did. lens condition: perfect to the point the professional that cleaned my camera said "wow we rarely see canonet ql17 in such nice condition". The lens is by far the high point of this camera. Overall, apart from the slightly tilted viewfinder, you will rarely find a canonet ql17 in such pristine conditions.  The camera has been professionally checked by an experienced camera repairman who didn't find any flaws apart from the slightly tilted viewfinder.
