Oblong folio, publisher's black-and-white illustrated stiff paper wraps, original color illustrated dust jacket. 21 color plates of original Star Wars concept art by industrial designer and illustrator McQuarrie. In their vividness, as well as their slight deviations from what ultimately followed, McQuarrie's designs retain a freshness and sense of excitement all but dissipated by the franchise's relentless and dismal march. The plates are in lobby card format, with perforation marks at the left margin for removal; each features descritpive text in Japanese on the recto and English on the verso, often describing sources of inspiration and changes made from original concept to final film: "Luke is fighting Darth Vader in what was to have been a scuffle aboard the Rebel Blockade Runner soon after Vader's Imperials captured the Rebel ship. Luke is wearing a kind of breath mask because Vader's troopers apparently cut through a panel to get in, allowing the air supply to escape." McQuarrie worked for Boeing and CBS prior to being recruited by George Lucas. He also worked on Episodes V (in which he had an uncredited cameo as a rebel general) and VI, as well as Close Encoutners of the Third Kind, Battlestar Galactica, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and others. He declined to work on Lucas's prequels.
