Elle doit son nom aux sondes spatiales Pioneer, dont la première avait été lancée par la NASA le 11 octobre 1958. Il y eut ensuite d'autres déclinaisons de cette radio sur ce même châssis, nommées "Vanguard" (première fusée lanceuse de satellites), "Atlas" (fusée du programme Mercury), "Explorer" (satellite lancé par une fusée Vanguard), et "Satellite". Très bon état cosmétique général. Complet, rien ne manque. Tous les composants sont d'origine. Quelques usures normales. Il n'y a ni éclats, ni fissures, ni craquelures sur cette radio, et seulement quelques très légères zones d'usure de peinture (voir photos). Le support orientable est présent. Fonctionne comme au premier jour (à condition d'avoir des émetteurs PO à capter, ce qui se fait rare en Europe, sauf par exemple en Espagne). Et de fait, la nuit, ce poste capte plusieurs émetteurs espagnols depuis la Bretagne (environ 600 km de distance)... C'est l'un des premiers postes à transistors à être commercialisé au grand public. My Kingdom Album Notes The Cutter is a strange compilation with cash-in written all over it. The front sleeve reads 12 classic tracks. It's a lie. Yes, some of the songs are among the best recorded by Liverpool's finest post-punk band, but the inclusion of two bizarre covers doesn't help the collection reach any sort of classic status. Perhaps WEA Records thought fans would see The Cutter as a best-of collection, which it isn't; maybe they thought those same fans would clamor for the covers of songs by the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. To start with, the album material isn't necessarily the best of. While the songs are a just-decent sample of some of the finer moments from the band's glory days, Songs to Learn and Sing and Ballyhoo are both better introductions. Albums covered include Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, Porcupine, Ocean Rain, and Echo & the Bunnymen. There are classics here to be sure: "The Cutter," "A Promise," and "Ocean Rain" are all glorious slices. But there are glaring omissions among these classics, including "Lips Like Sugar," "The Killing Moon," "Bring On the Dancing Horses," and "Never Stop." The Cutter might be a nice find in the used CD bin, if one is looking for one particular track and an assortment of other okay songs. The live covers certainly don't justify the album, as they serve merely to break up an otherwise interesting collection. "Paint It Black" sees Ian McCulloch butchering the classic song like a campy vampire; it actually starts out promising, but McCulloch falls apart about a minute and half in. "All You Need Is Love" just sounds stupid, as if the band had only been rehearsing it for a day; there's no passion in the performance. Generally, in the sense that Retrouvailles evinces, from beginning to end, that paradoxical mixture of solidarity in the pursuit of a collective goal, together with competitive individual excellence that makes jazz great. There is unstinting excellence and unflagging attention to detail; all the while knowing that no one is likely to get rich from this record, or this music, even though they really should. Specifically, because like many listeners of my advanced age, I fell in love with the music via a sound similar to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers—those little big bands (or are they large small ensembles?)— that mix genuine funk with elegant sophistication, delivered by exquisitely arranged multi-horn line-ups. De Preissac clearly draws on this inspiration as well. The expertly navigated changes in meter and tempo are right out of the Wayne Shorter-era Jazz Messengers. The always subtly surprising tonal colors in de Preissac's arrangements recall the arranging work of his compatriot, flautist Christophe dal Sasso's Exploration (Nocturne, 2006). There are further parallels. Drummer Andréa Michelutti, like Blakey, favors the booming lower range of his kit. De Preissac, for his part, calls to mind some of the best qualities of the playing of various Jazz Messengers pianists (Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton, Mulgrew Miller): a round, gospel-tinged sound, a slight florid tendency to the baroque, all the better to be heard over and between the large-ish ensemble. In de Preissac's case, these characteristics are overlaid with classical elements as well (as on his solo on "Minor's Mood"). As a brief cross-section of the players' strengths, listen to the sequence of short solos on "Jungleblues," which sounds for all the world like a Jazz Messengers show closer. Tenor saxophonist Jean-Christophe Béney is firmly in the tradition (though elsewhere on the record he favors ever so slightly "out" sonorities) and equally in control. As does trumpeter and composer Fabien Mary, who insistently splits the beats of his solos. For a bit of contrast, Michaël Chéret, on alto sax, heads for more angular territory, Eric Dolphy style, only to be followed by trombonist Mickaël Joussein's very cool sound on top of the rhythm. The leader takes a crystalline turn, followed by an arco episode from bassist Manuel Marchès and a brief trading of fours with drummer Michelutti. And that's not even the record's finest number. The front sleeve reads 12 classic tracks. It's a lie. Yes, some of the songs are among the best recorded by Liverpool's finest post-punk band, but the inclusion of two bizarre covers doesn't help the collection reach any sort of classic status. Perhaps WEA Records thought fans would see The Cutter as a best-of collection, which it isn't; maybe they thought those same fans would clamor for the covers of songs by the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. To start with, the album material isn't necessarily the best of. While the songs are a just-decent sample of some of the finer moments from the band's glory days, Songs to Learn and Sing and Ballyhoo are both better introductions. Albums covered include Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, Porcupine, Ocean Rain, and Echo & the Bunnymen. There are classics here to be sure: "The Cutter," "A Promise," and "Ocean Rain" are all glorious slices. But there are glaring omissions among these classics, including "Lips Like Sugar," "The Killing Moon," "Bring On the Dancing Horses," and "Never Stop." The Cutter might be a nice find in the used CD bin, if one is looking for one particular track and an assortment of other okay songs. The live covers certainly don't justify the album, as they serve merely to break up an otherwise interesting collection. "Paint It Black" sees Ian McCulloch butchering the classic song like a campy vampire; it actually starts out promising, but McCulloch falls apart about a minute and half in. "All You Need Is Love" just sounds stupid, as if the band had only been rehearsing it for a day; there's no passion in the performance. Generally, in the sense that Retrouvailles evinces, from beginning to end, that paradoxical mixture of solidarity in the pursuit of a collective goal, together with competitive individual excellence that makes jazz great. There is unstinting excellence and unflagging attention to detail; all the while knowing that no one is likely to get rich from this record, or this music, even though they really should. Specifically, because like many listeners of my advanced age, I fell in love with the music via a sound similar to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers—those little big bands (or are they large small ensembles?)— that mix genuine funk with elegant sophistication, delivered by exquisitely arranged multi-horn line-ups. De Preissac clearly draws on this inspiration as well. The expertly navigated changes in meter and tempo are right out of the Wayne Shorter-era Jazz Messengers. The always subtly surprising tonal colors in de Preissac's arrangements recall the arranging work of his compatriot, flautist Christophe dal Sasso's Exploration (Nocturne, 2006). There are further parallels. Drummer Andréa Michelutti, like Blakey, favors the booming lower range of his kit. De Preissac, for his part, calls to mind some of the best qualities of the playing of various Jazz Messengers pianists (Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton, Mulgrew Miller): a round, gospel-tinged sound, a slight florid tendency to the baroque, all the better to be heard over and between the large-ish ensemble. In de Preissac's case, these characteristics are overlaid with classical elements as well (as on his solo on "Minor's Mood"). As a brief cross-section of the players' strengths, listen to the sequence of short solos on "Jungleblues," which sounds for all the world like a Jazz Messengers show closer. Tenor saxophonist Jean-Christophe Béney is firmly in the tradition (though elsewhere on the record he favors ever so slightly "out" sonorities) and equally in control. As does trumpeter and composer Fabien Mary, who insistently splits the beats of his solos. For a bit of contrast, Michaël Chéret, on alto sax, heads for more angular territory, Eric Dolphy style, only to be followed by trombonist Mickaël Joussein's very cool sound on top of the rhythm. The leader takes a crystalline turn, followed by an arco episode from bassist Manuel Marchès and a brief trading of fours with drummer Michelutti. And that's not even the record's finest number. After studying the cello and the trombone at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique he went on to play in a number of Big Bands. In the 1960s he accompanied Marlene Dietrich, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis and Charles Aznavour, and in 1970 added the tuba, working as a studio musician and recording with Michel Legrand, Vladimir Cosma, Michel Colombier and others. From 1973 to 1983 he accompanied Claude Nougaro with Eddie Louiss and Maurice Vander, and played in the orchestras of Martial Solal, Michel Portal and others.  In 1981 he formed his own group, the "Steckar Tubapack", and his first recording in 1982 won the Prix Boris Vian, awarded by the Académie de Jazz. Marc Steckar has recorded over twenty discs using the tuba and in 1990 he started to mix the tuba with other ensembles, big bands, brass bands, wind bands, and choirs. In 1994 he composed several concertos for tuba, euphoniums and trombones and in 1999 received the Sacem Prix Printemps.
