But times are changing, and it's surely a sign of our increasingly 'virtual' age that Hartmann, whose Neuron was one of the largest, loudest, and most expensive hardware synths of recent times, have chosen to aim straight at the computer with their second release. Whatever the motivation, software has to be a more economical option for a developer, even if, as in the case of Neuron VS, the software comes with a hardware controller. Tooling up for a rack Neuron, on the other hand, would have produced another mega-thousand-pound product. Refreshing The Neurons The original Neuron created quite a stir when it was announced by promising a new approach to synthesis and sound creation, and anyone who heard one, as I did while attending the Frankfurt Music Fair during its launch year, couldn't ignore the range and volume of sounds it produced. I was continuously reminded of the Neuron's impact as it swooped and roared in the background of an interview that I recorded at that show. Now the attractive concept of running that technology from your computer desktop has created a stir of its own. The Neuron VS package consists of two parts, one hardware and one software (as this review was approaching completion, a second software component, Modelmaker, was added to the bundle — see the boxout for more on this). The hardware element is the USB-driven Nuke remote control unit, which offers a single stick controller — the X-Y joystick, of which there are four on the original Neuron keyboard — and four assignable continuous controllers. Neuron VS, the software component, is essentially the synth engine from the original Neuron in plug-in form. Obviously, the keyboard version has the advantage of its own dedicated hardware, so its performance is not dependent on the power of your CPU or the amount of RAM you have installed, as is the case with Neuron VS. The keyboard version also offers surround-sound audio compatibility, future plans for audio-input processing and four-part multitimbrality. But the rest remains largely the same. The MP 2500 R has the same overall design philosophy and technical facilities like the smaller MP 2000 R MK II player. Both have been developed to reproduce high-res audio files without any trace of compromise. Instead of a CD mechanism T+A have equipped the MP 2500 R with the SACD drive from T+A's High-End SACD player MP 3100 HV which is a completely new development. As in the MP 2000 R MK II, PCM data is converted using T+A's outstanding double differential quadruple converter with all it‘s sophisticated digital signal processing. Neumann KM 84 Small Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone. The Neumann KM 84 i and KM 84, a classic small diaphragm FET condenser microphone, is the result of a visit to Norwegian State Television by Neumann engineers in the mid-1960s. NST wanted smaller, transistor-based microphones for a new studio but needed these microphones to run off of their central 48V DC power system rather than 12V T-Power. Neumann's engineers devised a plan for powering a microphone in this way and a major innovation, which we now know as phantom power, was born. The KM 84 i and KM 84 uses the KK 64 capsule from the tube-amplified KM 64 microphone. This capsule produces a near-perfect cardioid pattern which maintains frequency response even 130-degrees off-axis and yields a very natural sound without comb-filtered artifacts due to bleed from other instruments. The FET and transformer-output amplifier of the KM 84 i offers very high headroom, which makes the microphone widely used as a close microphone for drums, particularly snare drum. A -10dB pad is switchable on the body of the mic for recording especially hot signal sources. As is the case with all Neumann products, the b'"'ib'"' designation is for microphones that shipped with an XLR output connector for export to the US. Energy veritas v2.0r (Neuf). The intriguing V2.0R ($1,000/pair) makes use of a 6.5-inch composite woofer and a 1-inch aluminum-dome tweeter on its front face, plus two side-firing 3-inch drivers. The V2.0R is switchable between dipolar and bipolar radiation, plus it offers a unique (as far as I know) twist with a third position called "corner." As you might anticipate, Energy designed this setting for setups in which the surrounds have to be placed in or near corners. To compensate for corner placement, this setting deactivates the side driver firing toward the rear wall, which eliminates the anomalies that result from a driver firing in such close proximity to a boundary. The hook is a level control that adjusts the output of the side drivers relative to those on the front baffle. At its highest setting, the side drivers are 1 decibel lower than the front drivers, while, at the lowest setting, the side drivers are completely off. Essentially, this means that you can run the V2.0R as a monopole, as well. To me, this is highly important for multichannel-music playback and cements this surround as one of the more-innovative ones I've ever come across. Schoeps DSP-4 KFM 360 This unit is in good cosmetic condition and turns on, but I did not test it myself. I bought it used from the exclusive Schoeps French distributor Areitec in 2017, so it should be in good working condition. Invoice is available. I never had any opportunity to use this fantastic piece of gear. Sold as is. Comes in its original Schoeps wooden box with a Schuko power cord (France), a stereo XLR cable (5 pins) and a XLR split Y cable. The DSP-4 KFM 360 is a 24-bit processor unit. Together with the sphere microphone KFM 360 and two bidirectional compact condenser microphones CCM 8L, it forms a compact 5.1 surround recording system with excellent spatial imaging capability. The processor derives the six 5.1 surround channels from only four microphone signals (the two pressure transducers in the KFM 360 plus two figure-8s) and offers a wide range of selectable settings. If the unprocessed microphone signals are recorded (four channels), the effective directional settings can be chosen retroactively during post-production playback. KLARK-TEKNIK DN9340 HELIX. Power-packed signal processor that can solve the most difficult sound problems. The DN9340 Helix EQ offers complete digital operation of an analog signal, with controls that are succinct. The first thing I noticed about the unit was the clean, clear, color display and arrangement of control knobs and touch pads. Navigation of the Helix is achieved through the touch pads initially, by deciding on the type of EQ or filter desired with the touch controls on the left side. Those controls are joined by several display lights that indicate the mode of operation the Helix is currently engaged in. There is also a bypass mode switch. On the right side of the display is the secondary touch pad, allowing for access to the parameters and additional functions, as well as storing and recall of up to 64 favorite EQ settings. Also incorporated into the touch control section is the Home/SetUp pad, which allows for instant menu access, as well as an escape from Store and Recall functions, in the event you get overwhelmed with the amount of functions at your disposal. Just below the right side touch controls are the three value/option controls that access the actual cut and boost, and frequency selection. Joining these controls on the right side is an attractive arrangement of LED meter stacks displaying the L/R input levels, the L/R output levels and the high and low-threshold level displays for the dynamic portion of the Helix. The Helix EQ is able to operate many functions simultaneously. For example, you can set the overall mains system through the use of the 12-band parametric EQ and then engage the 1/3 octave mode during performance for additional assistance and instant course correction. This can be done through the use of either the scroll and adjust knobs, or a sensitive touch pad just below each of 30 ISO standard frequencies on the 1/3 octave display. If that mode of display is not your fancy, you may engage the “Curve” display, which shows the actual shape of the waveform after the EQ is applied. Incidentally, you can scroll through the many functions of the Helix EQ and not affect the sound of the EQ until actually engaging that function.
