Davis would have been a perfect fit at Stax or Atlantic in the mid- to late '60s, but his recording career didn't get rolling until the early '70s, when his brand of gruff but passionate blues-based R&B was losing ground in favor of funkier sounds. And while producer Allen Orange consistently drew fine performances from Davis in the studio and gave him powerful and sympathetic backing, Orange's record labels (House of Orange and Seventy-Seven Records) didn't have much muscle in the marketplace. Davis recorded for other labels over the course of his career, including Ace and Luna, but they didn't fare much better with him than Orange's imprints, and Davis was little more than a cult figure when he died in 1984 at the age of 38. The Lost Soul Man collects 25 tracks Davis recorded during his tenure with Orange, and while the presence of repeated alternate takes and unreleased tracks that didn't get the studio polish they need dull the impact of this set just a bit, it's still a potent testament to his talents. At his best, Davis' singing suggests the cool passion of Bobby "Blue" Bland blended with the gritty fire of Wilson Pickett, and he's good enough to merit both comparisons; the slow slink of "I'm Gonna Change," the lover's regret of "I've Got to Pay the Price," the potent groove of "Ain't Worrying About Jody," and the primal shouter "Hot Buttered Love" are all stellar performances and leave no doubt this man could and should have had some hits under more favorable circumstances. While Charly's Sad Shades of Blue offers a broader portrait of Geater Davis' career, The Lost Soul Man does restore some of the man's best moments in the studio to circulation, and fans of great Southern soul will want to give this a thorough listen. ~ Mark Deming

Similarly, the songwriting has its own flavor. Hornsby wrote seven of the nine songs with his brother John Hornsby, and they create their own world, a working-class environment of longing and loneliness set against the background of the Virginia Tidewater area. (The album cover displays a sepia-toned photograph of the band set over another photograph of the long Chesapeake Bay Bridge.) The lyrics are lightly poetic and restrained, for the most part. The exception is the title song (written by Bruce Hornsby alone), a brave if somewhat clumsily written attack on the heartless right-wing politics of the mid-'80s, as the U.S. suffered through a second Reagan administration determined to roll back civil rights gains. The boldness of the statement and the lovely piano theme more than compensate for the awkward writing, however, making the song one of the album's most memorable. And that's saying a lot when the competition includes the engaging "Mandolin Rain" and the appealingly romantic "Every Little Kiss" (Hornsby's other sole writing credit). Perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that the music is so accomplished. Hornsby was no teenage neophyte when he made it, having kicked around the music business and gotten into his thirties, and the band includes such veterans as David Mansfield, who may be remembered as a member of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder troupe and the Alpha Band, as well as being a film composer. Sometimes a debut album just happens to be the first music most people get to hear by a mature talent, and that's the case here on the debut album of the year. Bruce Springteen streets of philadelphia 12" Picture disc rare !!! "Streets of Philadelphia" is a song written and performed by American rock musician Bruce Springsteen for the film Philadelphia (1993) starring Tom Hanks, an early mainstream film dealing with HIV/AIDS. Released as a single in 1994, the song was a hit in many countries, particularly in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, and Norway, where it topped the singles charts. In the United States, the single peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. The song received acclaim and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song and four Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television. In 2004, it finished at number 68 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema. The song is listed among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. In early 1993, Philadelphia director Jonathan Demme asked Springsteen to write a song for his film, adding "I want it to play in the malls." *** 4 Classic GOON SHOWs from BBC Transcription Service *** Talking about the influence of The Goon Shows on the British comedy that followed it, The Wikipedia entry states: - Eddie Izzard notes that the Goons and Milligan in particular b'"'influenced a new generation of comedians who came to be known as 'alternative'.b'"' John Cleese [of Monty Python fame] notes that b'"'In comedy, there are a very small number of defining moments when somebody comes along and genuinely creates a breakthrough, takes us into territory where nobody has been before. The only experiences to which I can compare my own discovery of the Goons are going to see N. F. Simpson's play One Way Pendulum... or, later on, hearing Peter Cook for the first time. They were just light years ahead of everyone else.b'"' These four vintage episodes come from the middle of the show's life run and were recorded in November and December 1956. BBC Transcription Service disks of the shows were distributed throughout the Commonwealth the follow year and were later released in the USA. In all there were over 240 Goon Shows, most written entirely by Spike Milligan, an amazing output. These two disks are not in the best condition and do have some surface noise, Nonetheless, a lot of pleasure and fun can be had from listening to them and what Goon Fan wouldn't want to own them? (NOTE: These disks have been spot-checked for condition.) Jean-Michel Basquiat - The Offs 35th Anniversary Vinyl Album Jean-Michel Basquiat was a music fanatic and wannabe drummer who before he hit superstardom as a visual artist often needed cash—fast. Sometimes the two worlds collided. Once was in 1981 when the young Basquiat agreed to design an album sleeve for his friends in the punk-ska band, The Offs, in exchange for $400, which his mother needed to pay her rent. Basquiat’s design for the album, called simply First Record, included some of the earliest examples of motifs that would come to define his work—a cartoon-like, black-and-white totemic figure standing atop a triangular mound with a crown of thorns hovering above his head. The punk band’s name appears written in Basquiat’s signature scrawl in three spots. Today, original copies of the album sell for thousands of dollars. More than three decades after its original release, First Record is being reissued as a limited edition of 500 by the legendary rock promoter, Johnny Brower, who owns the rights to the album This Record is the number 101 on 500
